New dark spot on dogs tongue

Hello,

My dog (roughly 2 years old) has recently started developing a dark spot in the middle of her tounge. At first I thought it was just a small bruise but it appears to be growing slowly larger. She is a mix not sure of all but apppears to be some Sheltie, Beagle, and only God knows what else.

Please if anybody has any thoughts or has seen this before let me know.

Thank you.

My 2yr old GSD just got a black spot a couple months ago. It started off as a little black dot on his tounge and got a little bigger. It's has to do with their pigment.

Could he have some Chow Chow in him? Chow's have dark purple tongues (usually appears black) and if a dog has a bit of a mix of chow in them, they will have dark spots on their tongues..........

No, no chow at all. I read a posting online that talked about dark spots or a spot appearing as a result of melanoma. Anyone ever hear of that?

I will try to get a picture up tonight.

I read that too but I had my vet take a look at the spot and he said it was okay it's just the dark pigment thing. If you are worried have the vet take a look at it.

Here's my dogs black spot...it appeared in March looked like a pen dot then got about 3x bigger (not a great picture but one where you can see it)

Purebred Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds, I think Collies and bunch of other breed have black spots on their tounge it's doesn't always mean they are mixed with Chow or Shar Pei thats a myth.

My samoyed has had 2 dark spots on her tongue since she was a pup. We always thought she had bruised it as a puppy, but 10.5 yrs later it's still there. No vets seems to show too much concern about it...but I'd ask at your next visit... unless it gets bigger quite fast... then I'd be making a special trip to the vet!

Pigment Spots

My dog (Fergus, ShihTzu-Lhasa Apso mix) got that too, about a year ago. It started out as a little spot on the left side of her tongue and grew a bit. The vet said it is just a pigment spot, and just to keep an eye on it to make sure it doesn't change texture or become raised. If it does, have it checked right away.

Hope that helps!
