Of course they don't buy from bybs. They buy from commercial breeders or puppy mills.

Well, more like mills...

Quote:
Infected puppies were traced to Pets Unlimited in Burnside and a Digby-based woman who sells through newspaper ads, at the roadside and in parking lots, said SPCA spokeswoman Judith Gass
In Qc, we all know what this means:
Quote:
Pets Unlimited only buys dogs from SPCA-inspected breeders, Harrison said. The pet store hasn't bought puppies from backyard breeders for 4 1/2 years, after an entire litter became infected.
(i.e. nothing at all)

What is it going to take for Pets Unlimited to stop selling animals.. lost revenue???

What is it going to take for people to stop buying animals at Pets Unlimited or anyother Pet store that sells animals...education...

I for one take every opportunity to try to educate people on the horrors of puppy mills and how anyone who shops at Pets Unlimited, etc supports the abuse and torture of innocent animals... (you can only imagine how popular I am at the dog park, hehehe)...

People live in a little dream world when it comes to little puppies staring back at ya from the pen in the pet store, "someone needs to love him/her.. he looked so sad and lost and lonely and scared".. that is the time when I would love to shove a picture of the mother/father of this little ball of fluff in their faces and say.. how do you thinks the puppies parents feel!!!! locked in a cage 2x2.. never knowing love and comfort and security.. only abuse..

Case in point.. last week in the dog park a lady comes up to me.. she has a 5 month old female Berner...she says to me.. "is that a Bernese".. pointing to my Dudley... thinking to myself.. are you for real lady.. you have one.. I said yes... that's a Bernese.. why would you ask that....she says.. "cause he so big".. (Dudley is a big male.. he is 130lbs...not over weight.. just big) I said males are usually bigger than females...where did you get your dog by the way.. she says "At Pets Unlimited".. so I said...so you got your dog from a puppy mill".. her.. all indignient.. Noo.. it came from a breeder who shipped the dog to the pet store for me.. so I say.. you got your dog from a puppy mill...your village is calling you..

She avoids me now in the park..

I don't blame her for avoiding you. I think we all share your feelings on the subject but when you answer someone sarcastically you run the risk of having them turn a deaf ear to whatever you're saying.

There was a time when I was completely oblivious to so many things regarding puppies and puppy mills. It doesn't take much, just a little common sense to have your eyes opened.

But maybe if we take the time to talk reasonably to people they will get the education that they need, and we've opened the avenues of comunication in the future, when the pup has a medical problem or when they want to get another dog. and we'll be in a position to the dog some good.

I want to thank everyone here for being so kind to me when we got Cooper. Joey was a rescue dog and when he got sick I came here for advice. And when we had him pts I came here for comfort. And when my husband brought Cooper from a pet store to try to heal my broken heart I came here concerend about the background. I got not one word of criticism--just some great advice about how to talk to my husband about it.

And last week we were at the mall where my husband announced that he couldn't stand to look at those poor puppy mill babies in cages where the wire hurts their feet. We've been educated through kindness.

And even though it was Cooper's birthday we refused to go in to the pet store and spend even a dime. We gave him some licks of ice cream and a rain check on his gift.

That's extremely rude, do you always know everything about everything?
If there's something you don't know much about and someone answers you like that would YOU be willing to listen?

A lot of people know about pet stores buying from puppy mills and byb's but many people validate their purchase by thinking "oh not ALL pet stores are like this".
That's why I have a collie with hip dysplasia and a few other problems.
My b/f had done business with the pet store he was bought from for several years, and they always seemed like nice honest people, so when they told us "oh we only buy from responsible breeders" he bought it.
I was skeptical but he didn't wanna believe me when I said "uh...these people are lying". No one wants to believe someone they've done business with for a long time would lie to them, or do something as unethical as buying puppymill/byb puppies.
The only way to change peoples minds about buying from pet stores is either for them to find out on their own, or for you to say "Hey, this is what goes on and I have all kinds of information/experience if you'd like to know more about it."
If you go around acting pretentious or condescending not many people are going to give your opinions much thought, in fact they'll probably just completely ignore them.

A lot of people who get their dogs from mills end up with mutts with funky made-up papers and get SOOOO insulted when assume their dog is a mutt.

I don't get the part about the village.

I believe the village thing is in reference to calling someone "the village idiot" Something along those lines.
