Brown stuff in corner of cat's eye

My cat has been having a brown substance accumulating in the corner of his eye on a daily basis for the last few days. The vet said this is probably normal, but I was wondering if I could use a human eye-drop (Clear Eyes in particular) to help moisten the eye.
