Any tips for giving medicine

our dog has recently started taking regular doses of Potassium Bromide, to control what we think are seizures. It is in a liquid form and he hates it, usually runs away when he sees us coming with it. Any tips on what to mix it with to help disguise the taste?

You could try mixing it into a small amount of tasty canned food, but you'd really have to make sure your dog really cleans his bowl, since you cannot afford to give him less than what he needs...

poor baby!
can you squirt it onto the back of his tongue with a syringe (of course no needle...). This is what I used to do with my horses to give liquid meds. It is not pleasant (he will still run away!!) but at least you know it is in there. Then, you could give him a nice treat. Don't know if it would work with dogs. Good luck!

my dog never refuses anything mixed with tuna and the strong smell usually covers up the medicine smell.

Hi Louiemoose,

Sorry to hear your pooch may be having seizures
My 2 1/2 year old German Shepherd has been taking Potassium Bromide for about a year now and he hates it as well and we even get his Beef flavored but apparently even the flavoring cannot kill the nasty taste of this stuff
The best thing I have found to give the Kbr in is canned Green Tripe dog food......stuff stinks like nothing I have ever smelled lol but the dogs go nuts for it. I drop a tablespoon of this stuff on a saucer and then use the spoon to make a well in the middle of the glob and squirt the Kbr into the well and he gobbles it up.

I've tried MANY things in the past (yoghurt, raw meat, canned dog food, sardines and the list goes on lol) but the Green Tripe works the best.

Good luck
Tammy

Exclamation Syringe, BUT

I use a syringe for any liquid medicine as well, BUT be sure to squirt it in the side of the mouth and hold the jaws closed for a few seconds rubbing the throat to encourage swallowing, otherwise you could end up with liquid in the lungs (tip from my vet)
