When you switch foods, you have to do it gradually, over the course of at least a week, and then you have to give the doggies some time to adjust after that. Cheapy foods like Bil-jac are full of digestive aids and stool hardeners and when you switch to a more natural food, the body will need time to relearn how to do everything on its own. If you switch back and forth, you don't give the dog's body the chance to adapt.

A harder stool will come with time and with proper feeding, but it should not be a priority right off the bat. If the stool is soft and it's still early in the switch, that's ok. If it's still soft in a month, you might be feeding too much (keep in mind that the more natural foods usually have less fillers and have more digestible stuff in there, so you'll feed less), and if reducing the amount still doesn't help, it might be time to move on to something else. The thing is, commercial foods with stool hardeners give you the impression that the stool is hard and the dog is healthy when really the stool is only hard because of the chemicals in the food. In that sense, the stool is not a good reflection of the overall health of the dog.

Does that make any sense?
