sick 9month Lab
This past Saturday we were lucky to welcome Yeager to our family. He is a 9 month old Black Lab. HE was full of life and ate really good Saturday and Monday.WE discovered Monday that he had chewed up a toy out in our back yard but he wasn't having any problems. Monday evening I took him for a walk and he did wonderful. He came in a drank water and then just layed down. As the night progressed he just layed there and would not get up and would not eat or drink. Tuesday the a.m. he just did the same. When we came home and found that he had not ate or drank and started to drool heavly and throw up we called the vet. He went to the vet Wednesday, we told him about the chewed up toy and the doc checked him out and said he couldn't see any indication of a toy, so he and gave him antibiotics and dewormer and said he should be fine after a couple of days, he gave us a special diet to keep him until he improved. After staying up with him Wednesday night watching him spit up all night, we took him back to vet Thrusday. The vet said he did the test with barium and couldn't not get all the way down to do the rest. SO he said he wanted to do surgery to see if he could find anything. After surgery he called and said he didin't find any toys, but his gallbladder was enlarged and he had alot of gas, ( he said he had never seen anything like it before) He massaged his stomach to release gas and diareaha and closed him up. He is still at the vet hooked up to I.V. and receiving anibiotics. He has drank a little today and ate just a bite. The doc is still seeing a little vomiting and with grass, (he hasn;t been out since last Monday) so somehting was clogging him up. Can anyone give us a clue what to ask the vet to look for or what can be done to help our new member to our family.

I just want to say that I think it's wonderful that you're going to all this expense and trouble for a dog you just got! Many people wouldn't do it for animals they've owned for 10 years!
Did the vet have no idea what is causing the enlarged gall bladder? This site seems to be saying that liver disease or trauma caused by a blow of some sort can result in this: http://www.lbah.com/liversummary.htm |

I do not know about canine health but all the signs point to an obstruction of some kind, possibly. Vomiting and gas often indicate an obstruction casued by something - a tumour (that can be not seen on a typical xray or even a scan - it sometimes requires surgery). Or it could be an ulcer or a cyst? I can only guess but I am glad youer vet is doing his best and hopes he finds what is causing the problem. He may also have digestive probs - esp oif the barium diagnostic test could not be completed. Good luck!!!

Just a followup that Yeager came home from the vet last night and is feeling much better. The vet said that it was just a very bad viral infection. Thank you for your concerns. WE are so Happy and excited that he will recover...
