Cat scratching at floor

we have a multicolored short hair who is about 1.5 yrs old.

When she eats, and only at certain times, she will spend a great deal of time scratching at the floor around the food dish.

Is this a good thing or a bad thing? is she trying to bury it? I heard it might be her claiming it. Please explain?

scratching around food dish

I have a 5-6 week old kitten that I observed for the first time today doing something similar. It was after she had eaten that she proceeded to scratch around the dish as if covering something in her litter box.

I've had cats all my life but until reading your post and observing my kitten today I thought nothing of it. It occurs to me that it appears to be a inhernt trait that possibly relates to feral ways of hiding food for a return feeding. Seems logical.

Yup I do believe that this is a 'marking' behaviour.

Your cat is saying...this is MY food.

It's not a bad thing...it's a normal cat behaviour exhibited by some cats.

My 10 wk old kitten does the same thing. I used to think he wanted to go to the toilet, so i'd pick him up and move him to the kitty litter tray, but after reading all this i feel pretty stupid for doing that, lol!
