Is my cat too old to switch to Premium Food??

I'm hoping someone can help me. My cat is 11 years old and I love him dearly. Since I got him when I was 18, I couldn't really afford premium food most of his life. He's been eating Purina Cat Chow his whole life. I can afford premium cat food now and I'm wondering if it will help prolong his life if I switch, give him better health, etc. I'm assuming premium cat food has long-term effects, and I'm trying to figure out if it will do anything now or if it's too late to reap the benefits.

I hope you guys know what it is I'm asking!!! Thanks!

Your cat's not old, he's middle aged -- still many many many years left in him! Ease him into the higher quality food and all will be well. You may even notice some favourable changes in him (like his coat). Best of luck. (be sure to post some pics of your kitty -- we love pics)

Thank you guys soooo much! I thought that'd be the answer, but I wanted to make sure if it would even matter. I know he's not "old" (tee hee) I hope he lives 'til he's 20!!!! He is the best cat ever. He comes like a dog when I call him and he purrs 24/7. I will gradually do the switch to Iams or Science Diet. Does anyone know of any food that'd be better?

EEEEK! Science diet or Iams!!! Neither is good!!!

Here are some better ones (I assume you're feeding dry?)
Solid Gold KatznFlocken
Wellness Super5Mix
Wellness Super5Mix Salmon
Wellness senior (just in case you were looking for senior food)
Felidae (I can't seem to be able to post a direct link Canidae ):
Chicken Meal, Turkey Meal, Brown Rice, Lamb Meal, Chicken Fat, (Preserved with Mixed Tocopherols and Rosemary Extract), Menhaden Fish Meal, Eggs, Flax Seed Meal, Sun Cured Alfalfa Meal, Sunflower Oil, Lecithin, Nutritional Yeast, Natural Flavors, Linoleic Acid, Rosemary Extract, Sage Extract, Amaranth, DL Methionine, Taurine, Kelp, Cranberry Meal, Apple Meal, Probiotics, (Freeze Dried Streptococcus Faecium Fermentation Product, Freeze Dried Lactobacillus Acidophilus Fermentation Product), Vitamins A, D-Activated Animal Sterol Vitamin D3, Vitamin E, Vitamin B12, Riboflavin, Niacin, Choline Chloride, Calcium Pantothenate, Folic Acid, Pyridoxine-Hydrochloride, Thiamin, Biotin, Amino Acid Chelated Minerals, Zinc, Manganese, Iron, Copper, Cobalt, Calcium Iodate, Sodium Selenite, Bacillus Subtilis, Yeast Culture, Yucca Schidigera Extract.
Chicken Soup for the Pet Lover's soul Adult

That's just a few I can think of off-hand. If you want to feed better, you'll have to leave the usual "pet stores" and head to an animal food store. Iams and Science Diet are more like moving sideways, not up. And if cost becomes an issue, just remember that you might end up feeding less, and on top of that, you probably will have fewer trips to the vet.
