Ageression

I have a 4 y/o male choc lab, who is not fixed. In the last week he has growled at my kids and at myself last night.
Now last night he new he was going to be punished for leaving the yard, and chasing a cat, so when I went to grab his collar and put him in his kennel, he growled at me.
I am quite concerned ,this has never happened before.
Any help will be appreciated.

Neutering him *might* help. No reason for him to be intact, I assume you're not breeding him. Have you ruled out any medical problems or something that might be hurting him? If this is a recent development, I'd start with a quick vet visit.

If it's behavioural, do a search on "NILIF" - Nothing In Life Is Free. This is an easy way to remind a dog that he is NOT in charge. Could be something like your kids are reaching an age where he feels he can step up in the pack heirarchy or something.

What do you mean by "punished"? If you are talking about physical punishment, the dog may feel he has to defend himself against attacks, and that will aggravate the situation.

If not, he may feel he is in charge of the house and not you. Get him neutered and as already advised, use the "No Free Lunch" type training with him.

I also do not advise grabbing dogs by the collar - better to put a leash on him.

Here is a link that should help.

Thank you:
That article on Who is in charge is great, It sounds like my home to a tee, the dog thinks he is king.
I will try the methods mentioned and see what happens.
