Family angry dog at large
By Andrea MacDonald

LOWER PROSPECT – A Lower Prospect family is angry that a bandit named Smoky is at large after biting their four-year-old boy in the face.
Travis Humphrey says his stepson, Nathaniel Gillis, needed eight stitches after a former neighbour’s dog attacked him last Wednesday afternoon.

The family hasn’t been able to track down the owners, who apparently moved to the Herring Cove area about a year ago and left Smoky in the care of another neighbour. The owners have since retrieved the dog.

Humphrey is worried the dog could attack others. He said it has “nibbled at” several people in the community, though that could not be substantiated. The Daily News could not reach Smoky’s owners yesterday.

“Down here, the population is under 150 in Lower Prospect. You’re taking a dog like that and putting them in a population of thousands? You can’t do that. Our main concern is having that dog caught,” said Humphrey.

Humphrey says his nephew Calvin, 9, and Nathaniel were playing with Tonka trucks behind the Humphreys’ Lower Prospect Road home when Smoky attacked. He said his mother was just about to cut the top off a Freezee when a bloody Nathaniel came running in the door.

Humphrey said Smoky, a golden retriever-German shepherd mix, had lunged at the four-year-old.

“He turned his head and he seen the dog coming towards him and that’s when the dog grabbed him. The dog grabbed him and knocked him down on the ground,” said Humphrey.

“Calvin went and got hold of Nathaniel’s hand and just pulled him away from the dog, pulled him up on the step and brought him into the house.”

Humphrey said the owners visit the street every couple of weeks to leave food for Smoky with neighbour Kim Rayner.

“I have a family with four children,” Rayner said yesterday, “and he doesn’t growl or nothing around my kids at all. But we keep him tied up, though.”

She said Smoky chewed through his rope last Wednesday. Rayner said she last saw Smoky’s owners when they came to pick up the dog after the biting.

Humphrey said he doesn’t know if the dog has been tested for rabies, and has no idea when it had its last needles.

RCMP spokesman Joe Taplin said yesterday police refer all such cases to animal-control officials. The officials did not return calls yesterday.

No, that's not right. Only pits bite.

/sarcasm metre asplodes/

Good job! I'll be contributing as I come across any as well. This will also be a good resource for when anyone needs to fight the BSL in court.

Md. Infant Critical After Mauling by Family Dachshund

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

By Colleen Jenkins
Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, December 17, 2002

A 6-week-old St. Mary's County boy was in critical condition yesterday after being dragged from his playpen and mauled by the family's dachshund, police said.

The infant was sleeping in a downstairs bedroom Sunday morning when his mother, Andrea Meyers, heard cries coming from a baby monitor, according to a report from the criminal investigations unit of the Maryland State Police. When Meyers reached the bedroom, she found the dog attacking the boy, police said.

The dog had chewed a hole through the mesh of the playpen and pulled the baby from it, the report states, before biting his legs and feet. When police arrived at the St. Mary's City home, the baby was alert but had numerous lacerations on his lower body, a detective sergeant said.

Although state police identified the mother, Cpl. Roger Redmond refused to provide the name of the child because he was a juvenile. Redmond said police were continuing their investigation.

No one answered the telephone at the family home yesterday.

The child was flown to Children's Hospital in Washington, where he was reported in critical condition last evening, hospital spokeswoman Ashley Wolfington said.

Police said the incident was unlike any they could remember in St. Mary's County, particularly with such a diminutive dog. Dachshunds have short legs and long bodies. Even the biggest of the breed weigh only 16 to 32 pounds, according to the Dachshund Club of America.

They aren't typically aggressive, yet preparation is required to familiarize a dog with a new child, said Andra O'Connell, secretary of the New York-based club.

Otherwise, the animal -- which comes from a hunting breed -- feels like an overlooked older child, she said.

"The dachshund is so incredibly tuned to being a family dog," O'Connell said yesterday. "They are very loyal to their family and owners. They don't want to be left out, and for that reason, they will get upset. But attack, no. That's not normal."

St. Mary's County animal control officers removed the dog from the Meyers home after the attack.

Great idea. Its great to have them all in one place...

Especially for those who say would you prefer to get bit by a pit bull or a lab?

You mean Michael Bryant lied

We all know the truth, having no problem finding newspaper articles of the truth and our job of course is to EDUCATE those that don't know.

Bonus marks for Canadian attacks.

Bluffton woman who was mauled by three dogs

A Bluffton woman who was mauled by three dogs Wednesday evening as she mowed her lawn has been discharged from Lutheran Hospital in Fort Wayne, a hospital spokesperson said early this morning.

Two of the three dogs that attacked Jane Brown, 69, of 1118 W. Market St., did not have their rabies vaccines, according to animal control authorities.

The three dogs were a male Labrador retriever mix named Dominic, a female Labrador retriever mix named Bourbon and a female Chow-collie mix named Duchess.

All three remain quarantined at the Bluffton-Wells County Animal Shelter on the city’s west side, where they have been since Wednesday night.

i understand yoru upset, thats fine. and yes i know like most ppl other breeds bite and attack often, and more oftne than PB but they just dotn make the press...

by posting of other breded dog attacks dont you think you are just going to highlight other breeds that ppl dont like?? i for one know that they are now turning on the germ shep (my breed) and rottie in australia (NSW) now, because the pb has been sadly banished they are looking for a new target and you may jsut be providing some ppl with the weapons they need to pick on other breeds. look ii get your point, but it would not be productive for me to post of all the PB attacks i could find, it jsut adds fuel to their fires.....

i have heard so many reports of shepherd attacks in our media lately, they are the new breed to hate you see. lets not sit around discussing the damage other breeds can do, lets look at international responsibile dog ownership and dog laws, its high time we taught society to change its attitude to dog ownership and awareness of natural dog behaviour, and if we banded together it is very acheivable..., i personally find that far more effective than holding up other breeds to be taken to task....

signed a very concerned gsd owner....

have a nice day

This is the danger but here in Ontario the Attorney General when asked about German Shepherds and Rottweilers (especially as far as Winnipeg was concerned) said they were not an issue. He also said that to add any other breed to the ban (Dog Owners Liability and the Animals for Research Acts) it would have to go through the legislature again – they couldn’t simply add a breed.

Given his not an issue statement and the fact that Rottweilers were involved with both the dog related deaths in Canada over the last two years he has opened the door for discussion regarding the real issues. It is unlikely that they will add breeds as it would be an admission that he was full of it to start with and that the issue isn’t the breed but certainly the behaviour of the owners.

Certainly I understand your concern but as we have his statements in print, on video any attempt to add a breed will be ammunition to throw the whole thing out.

I know a girl who received over two hundred stitches from a Shepherd attack here in Niagara – there were no charges, no press and the dog was put down for one reason….if the owners wanted to keep the dog (which they did) they better start renting as the insurance company threatened to drop them – no insurance – no mortgage. A Shepherd jumped a fence in St. Catharines just as Bill 132 was introduced – local coverage only, the same for the two Dutch Shepherds that left a van in Niagara Falls to attack a girl.

These are Canadian attacks – in the Niagara Region and in no way indicate that Shepherds are bad – they are not. The laws need to address the issues and the accounts of other attacks indicate that, as you said, the issue is not the breed of dog.

Also as far as the owners being the issue this is not entirely true as a responsible person can go to the pound and pick up a dog that somebody else has already ruined and then find out that as responsible as they are ….the dog is ruined (not bad) due to somebody else’s actions.

No, I am not concerned. The point of this thread is to demonstrate that all breeds of dogs and(some cats) have the potential to be dangerous and thats what makes BSL unjust. I am not posting just one or two breeds I am posting any and all that I find just to level the field a little bit. I am sorry if anyone is offended.

i
I receive reports from around the world daily about pit bull attacks. As I have mentioned in other posts, pitbull and rotties are subjected to more abuse, neglect and abandonment than any other breed in north america. I am not trying to fuel anything here. As a pitbull owner I am tired of the stigma and focus on the breed. I am not trying to pit breed against breed I am just trying to demonstrate as I mentioned earlier its the deed not the breed. I am sorry if that makes some folks uncomfortable.

Dukieboy, I want to thank you for posting these.

I was having another "pitbulls are vicious" discussion with my boss yesterday, thanks to Guysborough Zeus and his stupid assed owners. , and he "informed" me that Labrodor Retrievers DO NOT bite. Do ya think?

Anyway, it was nice to have this information here, all in one place, so I didn't have to go scrambling all over trying to find some good examples.

On reading my own posts again I should clarify my views on Rottis. I only use them and Bryant's statement that they aren't an issue as proof that he has no clue. They were attacking in Winnipeg around the same time Dack the Quack was in Toronto saying there were no issues and they were involved in the last two fatal attacks in Canada. To say that other breeds (not Rottis in particular) aren't a problem is wishful thinking.

To sum up my feelings on Rottis: I have NEVER met one I didn't like (although there is one on a chain in a backyard by the park that I hope stays that way but he just may be all bark and I would have to step onto private property to meet him). While I have said the same about pits I have actually met quite a few Rottis.
