Greyhounds in the US need help
please cross-post widely
This is a cross posted message. I do not have any further information. Please contact the Dakin shelter if you can help. Hello, ! The greyhound track in Plainfield, CT voted on April 26th that they would discontinue greyhound racing. Unfortunately - and heartbreakingly they've also decided that rescuers have only two weeks to get the dogs out, and any dogs remaining at the track on May 14th will be euthanized. This is a monumental task because there are at least 500 dogs currently at the track. These are all young, healthy dogs, 2-4 years of age, who would make great family pets. If you can foster or adopt a greyhound, contact the Dakin Shelter (Leverett, MA). The site is listed below. They do have one greyhound from the Track on the dog page if you want a description of what their personalities are like. The last link is a greyhound rescue site. http://www.dakinshelter.org/ http://www.dakinshelter.org/dogs.html http://www.greyhoundgang.com/ The Dakin Animal Shelter 163 Montague Road Leverett, MA 01054 Please pass this on to all of your friends!

It does. She told me there aren't many to foster right now, (I offered to foster) but that may change... I hope I can help.

I would love to foster one but unfortunately there is a by-law that your only allowed 2 dogs per household.

I know, but I don't really mind. If no one complains, it shouldn't be a problem. People around here have 3 pitties and don't have any trouble... They don't have enough enforcement to nail the abusers, I doubt they will come after well treated, healthy fosters.

I just read this on another board:If anyone of you are on additional email lists regarding pets and
dogs, specifically, please be aware of incorrect information that is being posted. Last week, the Plainfield Greyhound Racetrack announced that they were closing their doors. Approximately 800 greyhounds will be retiring and ALL greyhounds will be adopted! Rumors are flying that 500, 1000 or even 2,000 greyhounds will be euthanized. THIS IS NOT TRUE. Greyhound Pets of America, the American Greyhound Track Owners Association, the American Greyhound Council, and the National Greyhound Association have a plan in place to contact reputable adoption groups and get retired greyhounds transported to those adoption groups around the U.S. In fact, Connecticut has a state law that no racing greyhound can be euthanized. If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact me. Additionally, I would appreciate receiving those emails that you may recieve so that I can report the correct information to those that are misinformed. Thank you, Liz Ardell Executive Secretary Greyhound Pets of America |

Agree Toonces but here in Quebec or at least in my district they are actually city inspectors who not only knock on doors to request proof of license they ask neighbors etc how many pets you own!
Yes, of course their time can be much better spent either educating or helping abandoned pets and yes I have been even ticketed for being in a large open field (not one person in sight) playing fetch without a leash. I did not naturally see it as fair but I paid the fines X2 (B4 I get jumped ladies - I did read ALL your views re leashed dogs) back to subject: an ex: 2 weeks ago I rescued a beautiful golden from a horrific life and fostered him for a week. I cannot tell you how many ignorant people made comments "oh my - 3? isnt there a law" etc Or: well, we can see who you favor" (golden was soooooo starved, thin and scared) and my two - well ok their fat ... I found myself spending so much time explaining - it's

I sat for a friend of mine's greyhound mix and I never got any bad coments. I got "Is this the mother and the other two are the babies?" (Boo being the mother... Yes of course. That's his ONE giant nipple...) I guess it depends on where you are.

We also have people coming door to door to see how many dogs you have and if they are licensed but when we explained that we fostered they were ok with that but told us if the dog was in our care longer than 5 months we would have to get a license (just a way to make money)
