Shih Tzu scared of & wont drink from water bottle

My two year old male shih tzu has become fearful of his water bottle. He drinks from a hanging bottle, like ones used with rabbits, to keep his face dry. For the past two months he has been barking at the bottle and wont drink from it until I go over and tap the bottle. It is just getting worse. Even tapping on it won't work every time now. It did fall once and perhaps the noise scared him. I can't figure out what else it would be. Is my dog neurotic? PLEASE Help. I fear he'll get dehydrated.
