Unhappy Simon is sick

Simon has caught a URI from Bogart (who departed today for his new home, snuffles and all. Yay!). Last night I heard him sneezing a few times and today he just crashed. He has spent the whole day in the closet, will not eat or drink (I syringed a little water into his mouth, flavoured with fishy canned food but it was a bit of a struggle and he was so unhappy I stopped; he maybe got two tablespoons). Tomorrow, I plan on getting him a homeopathic remedy - an immune-system booster - recommended by Dr. Guindon on this site.

He isn't sneezing at all, just lying there. No secretions, no rheumy eyes. The vet and I suspected that he might have one of the bad viruses at the beginning - he had to have two courses of antibiotics last year for fevers - but he has put on so much weight and is such a solid healthy little fellow, it began to seem unlikely. He is utd on his vaccinations - so much for vaccinations, eh.

Is there anything more I should be doing? I'm so attached to this little animal...

Has he vomited at all? Is he peeing?

Has he been tested for FeLV and FIV?

If he is the same tomorrow, I would take him to the vet. Not moving and hiding in the closet makes me think he may be in pain.

Simon

My Milo was exposed to rhino as a tiny baby. I adopted his Mom (Ella), his sister Abby and his sister Zoey from Lucky Rescue. Zoey later died at 6 weeks from the URI. He has battled chronic eye problems. Last year, his rhino flared up right before he happened to be going in to St. Hyacinthe (the Animal Hospital) for an eye treatment. He was lethargic, not eating, and he only wanted to rest his head on his Mommy cat's back. When they saw his condition at the Hospital, they kept him in for one night. They released him the next day because he was so unhappy in the Hospital that he actually escaped from his cage. They gave him a shot of Depomedrol (sp?) before he left though and that is what perked him up. By the time he got home, he was ready to eat boiled chicken. He was fine soon after and wreaking his usual havoc through the house. I knew that he was better when he flushed the toilet that evening as it is his favourite passtime to sit on the closed seat and listen to the water go down the drain when he leans on the handle. Although Depo is a very strong steroid, it helped when all else failed. I had previously tried lysine and Interferon, but they did not help much.

Hope Simon feels better soon.

Lisa.

Nothing makes you feel more helpless than when your fur-baby is sick. I hope he's better soon!

Simon is much better this morning, up and eating, a good sign. Not his frisky self, but not at death's door either. As usual, I seem to have overreacted. I think I might still try the homeopathic stuff, to see if it will reduce the healing period. If you had seem me last night, clutching him under a towel over a steaming pot to see if it would relieve him, while HE thought I was re-enacting the bunny scene from Fatal Attraction...

Badger..thank's for the laugh I am glad to hear you got Bogart a home and I hope Simon will improve  Any more kitties on your door-step?
I remember a couple of years back,Chico was looking sick at night,no runs,no fever,no vomiting,no heavy breathing...just sick looking, his little tounge was hanging out of his mouth. The next morning he was perfectly fine..the vet could not figure out what had been wrong with him
and it never happened again.
I hope there is nothing seriously wrong with Simon,I think sometimes, just like us they will have off days, with no explanation

Simon is still sick. Still no sign of secondary infection and occasionally he makes a stab at getting up and going through the motions of playing but he has no energy and quickly goes back to sleeping. He obviously still feels terrible. Problem is I can't get him to eat, even strong smelling fishy things. Once in a while he'll eat maybe two pieces of kibble and lap two drops of water. I tried to syringe some chicken broth into him but he really struggles. His breath is unbelievably bad, which I wonder might be an indication of bacteria. Vet?

Awwww Badger I am soo sorry,Simon finally has a loving home and then he gets sick  it's just not fair.
I have no advice to give, but not eating is serious...so another vet-visit.
In all the posts I have read about sick cats,I have totally lost my confidence in vets ability to diagnoze a cat right,it must be so very frustrating and upsetting...poor Simon and you  I'll be thinking of you, best of luck

Just wanted to add, he doesn't have a fever and isn't wheezing so badly anymore, fewer secretions - and they are still clear - I just wish there was someting tasty that would catch his fancy. Anything.

Thanks Chico, I seem to have a touch of the blahs myself, so we have spent all day curled up on the bed, three little animals.

Badger, his lack of energy is surely from not eating...my cats would never eat chicken, but maybe Simon would or tuna, sardines, but I am sure you've already tried.
Maybe yoghurt or something like it...
I would feel sad and out of sorts too if one of my cats was sick, hugs to you and Simon

oh dear

Aww Badger, sorry to hear Simon is not feeling up to snuff. I hope he feels like his old self soon. I'll be thinking of both of you with good thoughts.
