Misguided Student

Does anyone want to try to convince this student that she shouldn't "sell" her cats? Asking for an adoption fee is one thing, but "selling" is another. She also doesn't seem to know her breed colors. I found this ad on www.mcgill.ca here in Montreal and the ad sounds mighty fishy to me. I'd hate for these babies to end up in a research lab or worse. Anyone connected with Siamese rescue?

Two 5-year-old pure-bred Siamese. Friendly, clean and playful. Excellent health. Both neutered/spayed. One grey male, one brown female. 300$ for both (must be bought together) including all pet accessories (litter box, food bowls, toys, claw clipper, etc etc). Lisa (and Harry, Manx rescued from Lucky Rescue)

Well, since the cats are spayed and neutered, 300$ is a reasonable adoption fee. And if this woman wants the money, she's not likely to turn the cats over to a rescue for free.

Please tell her to ask many questions and have whoever takes the cats sign a contract stating that they will take proper care of them. Tell her to check out where they are going and ask if the people have had other cats and what happened to them.

No one who sells animals to labs is going to pay for them - no profit in that. Those people are looking for "Free to good home" ads ONLY.

If you ask me the posting seems reasonable since she is also stating they are in excellent health and that they must go together. She simply used the word SELL instead of ADOPT. At the end of the day they are both one in the same.

I would just add the caveat if I wrote to her or called her about what her contract entailed. At least she is not offering them "free" to a good home and $300 is not a bad price for an untitled Siamese cat - she is not suggesting they have a pedigree but it would be good to see the cat's parents and obtain its history. I will have my cousin who is a prof at the Law School there to contact her.

And no lab will pay $300 for a cat so that's good!

I would look at the cats first too to determine if they are in fact Siamese as has been pointed out - there is no reference to the colour points, always significant in a Siamese.
