Nail Bed Infection
Sequoia had a nail removed on Saturday and is being treated for nail bed infection with antibiotics. He seems to be in some discomfort. Has anyone dealt with nail bed infection? How much longer before there's improvement? I thought antibiotics kick in fairly fast.
The vet changed the bandage today and noted his foot is looking better. However, he seems to think it may still take some time. He is pretty much sleeping all the time. At first I was concerned about reaction to anesthesia, but the kidney and liver function look normal. What if the infection is fungal? Than the antibiotic won't do any good, right?

The nail removal might be causing more discomfort than the infection, since it only happened two days ago.
The course of antibiotics should clear it up. Did the vet suggest any pain meds?

Sequoias kidneys failed after taking Rimadyl post-neutering so he really can't take any NSAIDs. The vet suggests only aspirin for pain, given the history, but I am reluctant because even aspirin can also cause renal failure in rare cases, but there is some correlation in humans between NSAID sensitivity and aspirin sensitivity.
It has always bothered me that I don't have a completely safe painkiller for Sequoia.

Just curious - why was your puppy given Rimadyl after neutering??

It was standard procedure. Clearly, wrong on mulitple fronts.
1. Better to have neutered dog in a little pain to keep him from hurting his wounds. 2. Rimadyl is not well tolerated by all dogs. He spent almost a week at the hospital on IV support.

"Standard procedure" to give Rimadyl after a puppy neuter??
 I'm amazed. The pain puppies experience is probably minimal at worst.I have never seen a neutered animal show any signs of pain at all, especially very young ones. Sorry to hear what your pup and you have gone through.

A forgot to say thanks earlier! Thanks for your responses.
He seems a bit better this morning. Now, he runs around in spite of the pain he must be feeling and then curls up and sleeps for a while. Hopefully, this is a sign things are getting better. He sees the vet again tomorrow for bandage removal.
