Thoughts on mixing good quality dry and canned.
Some of you may or may not know, I, like many of us these days, am going through some tight times financially. I've managed to get my gang eating Wellness grain free. Maks had been doing well with the raw, but I gave him a lamb medallion one day and he hated it. He's never wanted to try raw again, so he's also on Wellness.
After adding Czarina to the mix, their food bill is higher than mine. I'm trying to find ways to stretch the budget a little, but don't want to skimp on the quality of food. It took me forever to get them to actually eat Wellness, I can't go back to Fancy Feast now. I was wondering, what your opinions were on adding some good quality dry to their canned. Right now I feed them 5 can's a day. Czarina gets either half a 5 oz can or a 3 oz can each feeding, but she doesn't eat all of it. The other 4 get half a can at each meal, which is a can a day for each. All plates are cleaned so there's never any food to throw away. If I give each less than half a can at each meal they scarf it down and are making it clear they are still hungry. So I am wary of giving them less food. If I can get a bag of good dry (wellness) and mix it with the canned, I think I might be able to stretch the food I buy them, because the dry mixed with the canned will fill them up so they are less hungry throughout the day. At least, that's my thinking. I'm hoping this is going to be just a temporary fix and once I am less choked by my pocketbook I can just go back to only canned. Any opinions on this?

You have to do what you have to do - if you run out of money, they won't be able to eat anything at all!
I give my kitties Orijen dry when I go away for the weekend - I know that they would eat all the wet in one gulp and then be hungry for the rest of the time. In my opinion, if you use the dry sparingly and temporarily, it's not going to harm them in the long run..

That's what I was thinking too. When I was giving them small amounts of canned and leaving them dry, they'd pick on the dry throughout the day but not eat all of it. They never seemed hungry, in fact I think they even ate less. They certainly didn't camp out in front of me when I was eating dinner like they do now. They had their moisture from the canned, still had fresh water available to them and had some dry to get them by during the day.

I would think that supplementing with dry would be fine. My cats get an orijen kibble "snack" in the morning and get their main meal as raw at night. I started to do that when I needed to cut back a bit on their portions (chubby factors). The next size package was to small to feed them both but supplementing with a bit of kibble lets me stretch it enough to feed them .

Thanks Teri. Yeah, I'm hoping this is just a temporary thing, but right now I've got to do what I can to stretch my dollar and still know they are getting good quality food. Every little bit helps.

I purchase the large cans of Wellness to keep the costs down, I currently spend about $60 a week with the fosters.
The Lamb is gross, I accidentally bought it for the kittens, they liked it, not as much as the chicken, but ate it anyways.

The biggest can's I can find are the 5oz can's. They don't sell the bigger ones. Actually I've seen those sold in other brands when I go to the pet store, but not Wellness.
Yesterday I went to Whole Foods and the only 8oz can's I saw were of Halo, and Pet Promise. I've never heard of Pet Promise, but I know my gang don't like Halo.
