Your dog's liver problems
My puppy (see thread: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread....shih+tzu+water) had his ultrasound today. The radiologist said the liver parenchyma is "slightly mottled" which indicates liver damage and alteration. It appears "sonographically older" than the age of the puppy. There is no shunt, but the portahepatis and proximal portal vein are larger than normal for the puppie's size. He said these results indicate some previous liver damage, low grade active disease, or a congenital parenchymal dysplsia. He said the enlarged veins could mean early portal hypertension. I am struggling to make sense of all this, and am worried about what it means for my puppy. I am anxious to hear from my veternarian tomorrow to see where we go from here.
I would love to hear stories good or bad about your experience with your dog's liver problems. Please help me learn what I can expect! |

Here's my post about my dog, Rudy's high liver enzymes, still pending...
http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread.php?t=48334 He has seen the vet once since then, the levels are still high so she kept him on Denosyl and added Marin. I am giving him Milk Thistle caps every other day, despite the vet telling me to be cautious with herbs....She wants to do an ultrasound next time if they are still high. Rudy just turned 12 so he is much older than your pup. After the next visit, I will post if I have more information. Good luck with your pup. Diane

I'm really sorry I can't offer much suggestions just hope and concern.
I'd think keeping toxicity levels at the lowest is the best thing, avoid contaminations and exposures to things that can create futher problems. Good diet (I'd suggest home prepared no dog food), and I'd stay away from vaccines if and where at all possible, and research any medication before giving it to your dog. The liver has an unbelievable ability as the brain does to rejuvinate itself. I hope this is the case and will pray for that.

I am sorry to hear about your puppy. When you talk to your vet tomorrow ask him/her about Denosyl and Milk Thistle supplements.
Good luck and keep us posted. http://www.medi-vet.com/Denosyl.aspx http://www.canine-epilepsy.com/MilkThistle.html Also, Dr. Jean Dodds (well respected vet) recommends a liver cleansing diet... http://www.canine-epilepsy-guardian-...liver_diet.htm |
