need advice should I get second opinion?
Hey all,
I posted a lot before about my cat. I'm very worried. He's getting worse. The medication he is on seems very strange. I thought it was valium!! It has a long name and i just thought that was what it is because that's what the vet said he'd give him. Well, I looked it up, and it's called amitriptylline when I looked it up on the net it said it was an anti-depressant .....no mention of animals. I'm confused and my cat is a mess!! His fur just keeps coming off and he's like a different cat. He's scared to death of everyone and isn't lovable (was a very, very lovable cat) he stays upstairs in one empty room in my house and just sleeps a lot. His fur (that he has left looks greasy) he's eating and going the bathroom but, his face eyes.......dead look. It's so sad!! Any advice?? I am calling the vet tomorrow (he's not there today) but, thought this would be a great place to ask what ppl here think and has anyone had to give their pet(s) this? for a whole month too! And it's only been about a week .......little more. Just a half a pill every night. Just seems to be getting worse. I miss my cat! Thanks in advance for any advice. Would be much appreciated! ~~Ani P.S i edited this to add ....should I get a second opinion.......!? |

When in doubt, get another opinion! Vet's are not infallible.

Aniluver, I have not read your previous posts so I don't know why your cat has been prescribed amitryptilin. But, what I can tell you is that it is used in cats for certain problems. Your vet did not make this up. And it's normal that the cat is a bit sleepy at first, that usually passes. I know this drug, I've been on it for a while, now. I use it for migraine prevention, not antidepression. They're not sure why it works, but it does in these cases. It was prescribed to me by a neurologist.
By all means, call your vet today. If this is a complex problem, I don't think changing vets when something doesn't work is always the solution. Sometimes, in any medical problem, you have to try a few therapies to get results. If you're not comfortable, you can definitely get a second opinion. In this case, I'd suggest to get a referral to a specialist. Hope this reassures you a bit. Lyne |

The med in questiion is one of the most common antidepressants. It takes aout 7-14 days to begin to work well though, at least in humans. I am not sure about dogs. I do not know what the symptoms were before that. Was he under some stress? I would think amitrip should help that but maybe he needs a different type of antidepressant, maybe not a tricyiclic at all (the kind anitrip is).
By all means, you should get a second opinion!! |
