OMG - Bright Red Blood in Bunduk's Stool
I am freaking out. Called the vet - we have an appointment at 4pm. Bunduk is acting normal, nuzzling me..I only noticed something was wrong when he turned around after headbutting me - the fur on his back end had bright red streaks and his anal area had a bright red ring around it.
I ran to check the litter box and sure enough there is a large stool. First part of it seems normal, last bit of it is a bit loose, with this blob of bright red blood at the end. The only thing I can think is different is that he may have consumed is carnation leaves. My moms friend bought her carnations and apparently Onnie and Bunduk were eating them up before I found out and moved them into a closed area. He may have broken some blood vessels and should be just fine. Good to take him to the vet anyways.
Good luck today.

Thanks L4H...its really scary.
Have any of your cats had this? Ive seen a little ring of pink/red on his bum before, when he was a baby but I never worried about it as I never found blood in the litter box and his poops were so weird when he was a baby and cuz of all the weird things he chewed got into. Ive never seen blood streaks on his fur before..or blob in the litter box  |

Yes, Puddles gets constipated every once in a while and I see some blood on her stools. Her next one is fine so I don't worry too much. Bright red means the blood is coming from the rectum area, not higher up in the intestines where bleeding could be a symptom of something serious.

Good luck at the vets!
That's happened here before when Buddy had a HUGE poop. He was fine the next day and back to regular pooping. Hopefully thats all it was for Bunduk... maybe he was pushing to hard.

Thanks for the input and goodwishes guys!
The vet said that upon physical examination there doesnt seem to be anything wrong, and just to watch his pooping habits closely for the next while and see if theres any more blood. Hopefully its just a one off On returning from the vet though bunduk has been trying to get rid of a nasty hairball as far as I can tell...i gave him some olive oil and he lapped it up, hopefully it will help. Its making me extra nervous though, the hacking and all. When we were breaking our fast just now, Onnie was in sight but Bunduk was no where to be found...which is odd for him, he always sticks with us, especially when there is food on the table (beggar). I found him asleep on the floor of my room...weird..but then again as soon as he saw me he started contorting himself and purmeowing for belly rubs. I think he's just having a bad day..poor baby  |

speedy recovery to Bunduk
If he was trying to bring up a hairball before you noticed the blood, the strain from that could also have caused it, or as krdahmer mentions a wee bit of constipation can cause abit of blood. Some sites mention carnations as toxic to cats but do not mention which parts of the plant, however on site mentions "the leaves of carnations may cause some redness & irritation around the mouth & in the skin."

Darn, I hate working!! I never see these threads till they are done. Anyway, sending lots of for the little sweetie. He does seem to get into lots of adventures. Maybe he and Timmy are related somehow?
Lots of fingers and toes crossed here that he is better tomorrow.

Bunduk pooped blood again and has just not been himself. He did cough up a nasty hairball though so maybe that was the cause? I'm not sure. He was trying very hard all night to get it out.
He did eat after he coughed it up so I guess that's good. I'm keeping a close eye on him and we'll go to the vet first thign in the morning if need be (most probably). Im hoping that it was just the strain of him trying to get he hairball out  |

Good thing I moved the carnations out of the way....theres no redness around his mouth or anything though, so I dont think its the carnations |

Aw, I'm sorry he's still ailing. Was it a fair amount of blood the second time or less than the first time? that he's healing on his own from whatever it was....
for Bunduk!

Holy!!!
Mystery solved!!
And holy .... He pooped again, this time with a little blood and I thought I saw something shiny in it. Poked around- I found a needle!!! As in a sewing needle!! No wonder!! He's now happy as can be! I have NO idea how he ate a needle, considering we havent been sewing at all and keep the kit locked away in a cupboard. He's a happy camper now....does this warrant an emergency vet visit? He's acting normally now but I mean there was a needle in him :| Crazy, crazy bunduk. |

a needle?? wow. |

Onster i wouldn't panic, just keep an eye on his poops. He has pooped it out which is good, now the little needle pricks just need to close. He should be fine.
wasn't it bunduk who got the lump from his shots 2 weeks later. |

I was waiting for someone to asnwer, thank u aslan!!
I just wasnt sure where to go from here - ie, what to do after discovering the needle. Yep, bunduk had the weird lump. It went away when he was at catnap cottages...took over a month though! Why ..i dont get it..why would he eat a neeedle?!? |

i didn't read right back, where did the carnations come from, if sent to you did they come with a card attached, hence the needle. it could have been in a carpet somewhere in the house and it just took him this long to find it. As for eating it, he's a kitty and its a pretty sparkly. The worse i can see the needle doing is little pokes and jabs on the way out. I really think he'll be fine, just keep an eye on him, his bum is probably a little sore.

Because it's shiny!I agree to just watch him and monitor him.The girl I used to work with chewed an electrical cord and got electricuted really bad.The foolish cat lost several teeth and alot of his lip and pallette and the cat still was seen trying to eat a cord afterward! It boggles the mind.

Yeah we got carnations but they didnt come with a card as far as I know, plus Id imagine if they were to use a pin they wouldnt use a needle
..phew...the best scenario happened and I have that to be thankful for- he pooped it out rather than it getting stuck in an odd position. We do have a lot of rugs/carpets in the house...I guess that's possible that its been there for a while. Now im going to be forever paranoid about him...he just doesnt know when NOT to eat something for Bunduks bum |

ummm rainy...bunduk does chew electrical cord and has electrocuted himself and has continued to chew on it after we began smelling something was burning. All wires are now covered with crittcord/chewsafe wireprotectors.
My bunduk isn't the brightest bulb thanks guys, ill keep an eye on him then He's looking at me now and prmmmeeemmmmrrrrrwww....*cocks head to the side*..."what's bugging u mommy?" |

Whew--glad he pooped it out ...but if his symptoms continue, onster, get him in quick. Likely he's passed what was causing the problem, but you don't want to mess around with peritonitis, so if he starts running a fever, goes off his food, or remains lethargic, get him in asap. And if the bleeding continues, you might want to have him xrayed to make sure he didn't ingest more than one needle!
That little ! Is there anything he won't eat? Bunduk, stop worrying your mommy!!!!!

OMG what a little bugger!
So happy he passed it without too much difficulty. Like Hazel says watch him for the next several days for any symptoms that might indicate an infection & keep an eye on the poops for the next little while. Bunduk stop eating what you not ought to silly

Get yourself a large powerful magnet & run it over the carpets, or a metal detector
