Nerve Damage

I have just been told by my vet that my puppy, Jake, who is 8 months old has nerve damage in his right shoulder.

He is not giving me much hope. He intends to give him some medication (don't have the name here with me), but feels as though we will need to amputate eventually.

Are there any treatments or shots that may help my puppy? Steroids etc.?

I don't know anything about meds for this problem,but I know dogs can easily adjust to losing a leg.

I'm sorry, I don't have any advice at all. I just wanted to wish you good luck with your puppy.

Maybe since you still have questions after talking to the vet you could seek a second opinion Maybe another vet would be able to discuss other options with you.

I would feel the same as you about amputation. But I do know of several dogs who have lived wonderful lives with only three legs.

That's terrible news :sad: Mine and Mocha's thoughts and prayers are with you.

Mocha has intervertebral disc disease, and when he gets a flare up, he goes on strict kennel rest (or mommy's lap rest ) and gets meds (Metacam, and some kind of robaxicet for dogs). It helps him, but that's an entirely different thing. However, I'm wondering if kennel rest might help your little guy...

I think though, that if you did have to amputate, your pup is young enough to adjust quickly. What happened that he has nerve damage? Poor little guy :sad: .

what type of dog is jake?
what caused this damage?
have you gotten a 2nd opinion from another vet?

We're not vets here, so we can't really advise on treatments or shots.
