Dogs 1st Heat - Swollen Genitals/Teats

Hi,

Kinda of a silly question, but after a dogs first heat do their nipples and vulva unswell again? My puppy's first heat just is in the middle and her genitals and nipples are so swollen ( I understand why ); but do they go back down in size after?

No worries I'm getting her spayed at the end of July!

thanx

After the first few heats there are puberty changes that can leave the nipples and vulva larger than before the heats.

We had a couple of females go into heat just before their spays were scheduled. They were both 18 months of age, so I'm assuming that they had both cycled at least once, maybe twice, before we got them. In both of them, the teats and vulva still returned to 'normal' after the spay. So since it's your pup's first heat, Crestfallen, she'll most likely revert to normal, too.

Ya of course! He is for sure going to get neutered. Easier procedure. We decided to get a male, for the main reason that going through a premature heat cycle with a female sucked! Bleeding everywhere! Less invasive too.

Oh my little Atti!

Cool Additional Q

My 8 month old Shih Tzu just started heat officially yesterday. I’ve heard the teets swell first then after a week or two she bleeds. Idk if it’s true or not. I’ve never had a dog go through heat. I was back and forth on breeding her but decided to have her spayed a little too late as she has just started. If she is spayed in the middle of heat will her vulva go back to normal? She only 7lbs and it’s huge on her little body lol I’m getting her spayed I just don’t want her vupca to permanently be close to ping pong ball size. Thanks

The operation will be easier on her and possibly cheaper as it will be easier on the Vet as well, if you let her complete the heat now it's started. Then spay her when your Vet says ok. You will have to be careful to keep her on leash, and maybe not walk outside your own yard at all, but there is much writing on the Benefits of going through a heat.

She should shrink up a bit but maybe not as small as she was before. Some do, some don't.
