Feliway rip-off!!

I went to the vet today to pick up Rockys meds and I just out of curiosity asked what they charge for Feli-Way,they charge $74 +13% tax,a refill is $44 plus tax.
I paid $39 +tax at Petsmart and refills are $22.
The vet-tech could not believe it and said he'd talk to the vet about it.
That's almost a 50% differenceand i am sure people who don't know,will buy it from the vet,what a rip-off!!

It's a plug-in diffuser with pheremon(sp?)that helps to calm down hyper cats/dogs,in my case stop cats from spraying and it WORKS

My vet quoted me 80$. I wouldn't be surprised if the supplier - and generally they only have one - jacks it up and the vet takes his piece of the pie. The supplier for my vet only sells Feliway so you can't even get a break on the cheaper brands.
Chico, how long did the first bottle last? I've heared 3 weeks to a month.

Feliway

Not too long ago I think it was The Fifth Estate or one of those news programs did a study on what vets charge compared to pharmacies for medication. The markups at the vet were outrageous. Cities like Toronto were the worst.
I started ordering my dogs heartworm meds from Australia rather than from my vet. I save 50%.

I guess it is the same for the Feliway.

Badger,it lasted about 5 weeks, which is pretty good.
The one I have in the other room,is not Feli-Way,but Nutri-Vet from Pet-Value and quiet a bit cheaper,it seems to work too.
Ideally I would want one in every room, but it would get a little pricey

Copperbelle, there is no bigger gouging than the pharmacy-business even for people,we just changed our meds to Costco, where the dispensing fee is $4,11 compared to Shoppers Drugmarts $12,99.
As retirees every little bit counts.

When I got my diffuser I paid about $40, the refills will cost me about $25 at the vet's office. But, when I went to buy the second diffuser, there was a woman there who came up to me and handed me her card. She told me she works for this company that they can supply things like that at way below prices.

Replacements cost $15.00!

Here's the site:

Vet AMerica

They have many things for cats and dogs for good prices.

I'm not sure about their shipping policy to Canada, but you can always ask.

I think we looked in to that already and they do not ship to Canada.
Feli-way refills here is $22 and Nutri-vet $17,so it's reasonable,at Pet-Smart and Pet-Value resp.

Ah okay. I've got to get Revolution this weekend, and I have to get it at the vet, because actually my vet is cheaper than even Pet Meds.

Or you could try this place which is in Ontario, so might be even cheaper than shipping from Australia http://www.petpharm.org/index-can.htm

And if you happen to be visiting Toronto you can just walk in, as I do sometimes, it is a full service pharmacy. When I've been there people have been in to pick up their human meds. They have a lot of prescription items, like flea/heartworm treatments, and some non-prescript. You have to check on the site to see if they carry what you need.

Longblades, thank you,it's certainly worth a trip to Toronto.
I pay $40 for 50,5mg Tapazole at the vet compared to $29+$9 service for 100 at this place.
They do not have the Feli-Way diffuser on the pricelist, but I am sure they sell it.

Breeze,I would not say it calms the cats right down, they are really not that different from before, but maybe it calms any anxiety they have, which often shows itself in spraying and that has definetly ALMOST stopped,I'd say 99,9%.It's a feline Pherenom(spelling?)and should not effect humans.

Chico - what meds is Rocky on for his health issues? Are they human grade? Probably the same thing a person uses for hypothyrodism? (sp) If that is so then it may be cheaper for you to get his meds at your pharmacy too. The vet can't refuse to write out the scrip for you. You can take it anywhere to get filled. JM

Chico2 doesn't get her feliway from Petsmart anymore (for the reason you mentioned). I believe she gets it from a lady on Ebay now.

chelonia,no you cannot buy Feli-Way here anymore,I buy mine on E-Bay now,it's $16.95 for refills.I don't remember how much the diffusers were, but not much more.

14+I have really no problems paying Rockys Hyperthyroidpills,it's only $59,60,for 100pills,they last,since he only takes 1 1/2 pills/a day.
But thank's anyway...

Where to buy Feliway?

Hi Chico,
I also live in Oakville, and cannot find Feliway for the price you have mentioned. I have two cats who DO NOT get along, although I have had great experience using the Feliway, but it is expensive. Which Pet Smart are you shopping at?

Thanks very much!
Sarah

PetSmart doesn't sell Feliway anymore, but there are a few online sources in the U.S. that ship to Canada. Check out eBay.

Bettycat,Apparently the Feli-Way in Ontario is not gov, approved anymore,or something like that.
You cannot find it in any store
I got mine off E-Bay,ordered refills regularly,prompt delivery,no problems.
The last batch of 4 refills,I paid $16,95 each,that's US $$.
My old vet on Speers Rd,charged over $80,of course I never paid that.
I do not use it anymore,no need to,but would not hesitate to use E-Bay again.
I can give you the info if you are interested.

Hi Chico,
My sister moved into a one bedroom apartment at the beginning of April. She purchased 2 of the feliway diffusers, started applying Bach pet rescue remedy, and a flower essence formula from Anaflora.com called "Spraying cat", and started transitioning her cats to a wet food diet and so far it has been successful. Her cat has sprayed for years atleast a couple of times a week. So this is progress right now. We are not sure what is working but she has stopped the 2 formula's and just has the feliway plug ins up. She thinks that the spraying cat has become alot more calm and relaxed. He actually wants to cuddle with her now

She buys the refills from the vets office for $33 w/ taxes....I will mention to her about ebay....thanks for the tip

Just my 2 cents for what it is worth! I tried Feliway when it was first introduced a few years ago on the advise of my vet. I did not have any spraying problems, but I did have a red Maine Coon that was a bit on the "nutty" end of the spectrum and she hoped it might help him calm down. This was before it was available at PetSmart. One diffuser did little to to help because it covers only so much area and my house was larger than it could work. I tred it in the room he spent the most time in and really did not notice any changes. I have heard good results from some people, but it did not work for me.
I cannot recall how much it cost at the vet, but it was up there.

My cat Rocky had been spraying for years and usually if one cat does it,the others follow.
I started with the Feli-Way plug-ins,one in the two rooms they are in the most and can honestly say,the spraying stopped, but it took a while.
It happens now occasionally,if they see a strange cat outside, but I can certainly deal with it once a week, rather than several times a day.
So the Feli-Way worked for me
I dealt with this lady at www.WhiskersWagsAndMore.com
