Cold Weather

I have a 110 lb 11 month old male rottweiler....and I'm not sure if he is being a wuss, or if it is really too cold for him.

If he doesn't get walked...he can get very restless...but its about -15, and we get going for about 10 minutes and he starts holding his paws up....I don't think those little booties would work because he would just rip them off.

Will he adapt....or should I wait until its warmer...because he loves the snow, just not the cold.

That's very cold...most Rotties are real tolerant of low temps, I have three & they love winter.

Snow packs between his toes & forms little ice balls, that's why he's holding his paws up. I know you can get booties, but I've never bothered. I'll put vaseline or baby oil between the toes & on the pads, that stops the snow from sticking.

I think the boys are more wussy than the girls about this...both my males will do this, but I've never had a female that seems to mind.

One of mine has an oopsie coat, he's long haired. His feet collect snow real fast!

Same problem with my pit bull - she simply couldn't go out in the minus 30 degree weather and snow. After 2 minutes she would be limping and hobbling with frozen feet.

I just ordered Muttluks for her, and they are great! She's so happy to be able to go for long walks and keep her feet warm.

You can teach your dog to wear them. Get yourself all dressed up first, then put the boots on. Give a treat after each boot. The second they're all on - out the door with great enthusiasm.

These boots are made in Canada. They are not cheap but are well worth it!
