"Instant" email notifications...re-name or make it so!!!

I'm wondering if I'm the only one.............

My sense is that this began within the past few months. I believe I joined up here last spring, and have no memory of it being a problem until a few months ago.

The email notifications I receive from here for new posts in threads I've either posted or subscribed to and, also, for new PMs received are arriving in my email in-box up to 12 hours later.

I'm finding it quite frustrating.

Often, I'll just check in and have a look around. It's then that I find these new posts - sometimes in reply to one of mine - much later, often the next day, I will receive the email notification.

Hi Rustycat,

I'll look into this for you of course.

Can you please be a wee bit more specific though.

- How often is the notification not instant? What percentage approx.
- On average what is the delay (in hours) between the post and the instant email notification.
- Are there other emails besides ours that seem not to get to you on time?

For other members - ARE YOU EXPERIENCING THE SAME PHENOMENON?

many thanks!
Marko

Of course, .....I forgot about Murphy's law!

Guess what I just received? - notification of Marko's post!

This is completely contrary to the pattern I've seen over the past few months.

To respond to Marko:
How often - always...
Average delay period - I'd be guessing, but would estimate3-4 hours
Other email delays - I haven't seen any.

This one is so exceptional, it was shocking!

Hope this helps.

OK -
The latest example:
I just found an update: http://www.pets.ca/forum/showthread....9&goto=newpost

It's now 2;35 AM 04/26 (NL).......this "update" I had read when I visited the forum almost 24 hours ago...( I am certain of this, because I did receive a PM from the same poster (of the above) and had been notified of that last night.

Here are the time "tags" on each email:
1) The (above) update: "25 Apr 2008 00:11:45 -0400"
2) The PM: 24 Apr 2008 23:57:28 -0400"

#1 was "delivered" last night, #2 showed up tomight

I have to say I have belonged here for quite a while and this has NEVER been a problem for me, EVER! If there is a PM or if my mailbox is full , I get an emqail to let me know. I check my email frequently (ie several times a day because I have a secure network where I receive test results for patients which are obviously urgent.) The emails from the hospitals and referring doctors are no faster than the ones from Pets.ca and since the work ones tend to be stat- ie immediate and very urgent, I receive them as soon as the pathology has been completed or the info is available.

I would talk to your ISP - it may be a router where you live. And some ISP's (especially smaller ones) are slower due to infrastructure - surely you have heard about some and larger ones (not here yet thankfully) slowing some subscribers down due to the increase in torrent type downloads by some people. They are also considering charing subscribers more if they download more and I think I would prefer that other than a slower service - but I prefer neither. It may certainly depends on where you live and where the routers are that link you toe Pets.ca's servers.

I experience this with different hospitals across the world and it can be frustrating but I do not believe this is a Pets.ca issue. I belobg to few otrher web site groups and 99% of them are professionally related and they are either slower or equal to Pets.ca.

Just responding to Marko's q.

Thanks for that input CK - I too have never had a problem with these notifications and considered the fact that it might well be an ISP thing (the Internet provider) and not a pets.ca thing.

But i will investigate further Rustycat (This coming week) and see what i come up with.

Again if other members can report if this is an issue for them, it would help.

many thanks!
Marko

I've been having the same problem. I was getting my notifications pretty quickly for a long time, and then a couple of months ago I started having issues with getting them.

I'd say I get half and half. Half the time I get them pretty fast, but then the other half, I'll get a notification several hours late, sometimes even a day late. I was using Bellsouth as my ISP, and only just recently switched to Comcast, and it happens the same. I'm not sure what the deal is, so I've just started checking the site now and then just to see if there is anything new going on.

Just waiting for some confirmation but I think we have figured out what problem may be due to. I'll post again once the problem is actually solved.

Thanks in advance,

Marko

Just to report, I received this notification within the past few minutes.

Now, that's more like what "instant" should be!

I've also been getting my notifications more quickly as well in the last week.
