Canned Food only diet OK???

I just fed Jimmy, our 6.5 month old Mini Schnauzer, canned Wellness puppy food. He absolutely devoured it  !!

Is there any medical reason why he can't eat only canned food, or should his diet be supplemented with kibble?

1.) Many dental cleanings in his future.

2.) Gastric problems.

3.) Weight gain.

4.) Expense.

There is really no hard fast rule...some small breeds thrive on canned only, but only a few without major medical problems.

He will eat dry food, I think he knows how to push your buttons already..dare I ask, are you spoiling him & giving into every whim?

IF you're feeding premium food like Wellness, I see no problem with him eating that only. The problems come from feeding grocery store food, which is composed mainly of water and cereal. I would feed my dog canned Wellness only, but at 75lbs, it would literally cost a fortune!

There is no proof that dry food helps keep teeth healthy. How many cleanings are needed depends on genes and maintenence, just like for us.

But what happens to the gums if only wet food is used?

I would think it would be ok,you can still give crunchy treats and get him used to having his teeth brushed, since he's just a puppy.
Wellness is high quality food, dry or wet..maybe you could mix wet/dry!!

Jimmy does have dry food available (Wellness Puppy) but he picks at it. If I could leave it down for him 24/7, I wouldn't worry, but we also have Shelby (Yellow Lab) and she devours Jimmy's puppy food at every opportunity. So, I can only leave it down when Shelby is outside or in another room.

If I feed Jimmy the canned food, he eats it at once. That way, I know he has eaten a good breakfast and dinner. He still picks at his kibble.

Both Shelby and Jimmy also get soup marrow bones once a week.

Lucky, FYI, at a price of $2.59 per can, it would cost $19.00/day for you to feed your 75 lb baby canned Wellness !!

Karin....yes, we definitely do spoil Jimmy (and Shelby too). The canned food is not a matter of giving in to his every whim, just wanting to make sure he has a full belly!!

Wow!!$2,59/can???What's in it,Filet Mignon
I pay $1,20 for a small can of Nutro for my cats and they don't even like it,it seems more expensive if it goes to the Crows
I keep reverting back to Fancy Feast, the only wet food they'll eat,but they eat good quality dry....

My husband says the dogs eat better than we do !!

Now that I know Jimmy likes it, I will "shop around" to see if I can find a better price.
