feeding question
Beathoven is a 9mth pit cross , has been on merricks canned and science diet puppy dry , well after reading some of the food releated posts (thanks prin) i am now switching the dry over to solid gold hounden flochen puppy , which he seems to love. but i see he has gotten a little chunky , he has
1 374g can in the morning , full bowl dry available all day (eats about 1\2) 2 cups approx and another can of merricks in the evening, i want to put him on more of a schedule and ration, i was thinking of splitting the canned in 1\2 and feeding only 2 1\2 cups dry a day , he is about 35 lbs , male and neutered with alot of energy , has atleast 4 walks a day and is outside alot at the babysitters.

a 35lb dog, although active, does not need that much food. You are on the right track to reduce to one tin of merrick per day with 1 1/4 cups of dry per meal. Keep him on that for a bit and just watch what his rib cage does.. if you can touch his side and feel a rib 1/8" from your finger push then he is optimum weight.

Merrick and Solid Gold would be more digestible than Science diet, so you're going to have to cut back eventually. Has he adjusted to the new food completely? If so, I would cut back an 1/8th of a cup of dry every week or two. If he's just slightly pudgy, I'd try reducing an 1/8th and wait a couple of weeks and see if there's any change. If there's no change, another 1/8th for 2 weeks, and if he's fatter, 1/8th for a week and recheck the weight. Does that make any sense?
On the wolf king, Jemma gets 2-2.5 cups a day (she's 60lbs) and Boo gets 2.5-3 cups a day and he's 87lbs. Boo used to get about 5 cups of Euk before I switched. It's a lot more dense. |
