Please help! Cat weak in back legs/urinating issue

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi everyone,

I really hope someone out there can help me because I just don't know what else to do.

My cat, Molly (female, approx. 10 and a half years) has always been a healthy cat. Her medical history is basically spaying/sorting her hernia when she was a kitten. That's it.

Since Sunday (9th Oct) morning, I noticed that she was wobbling a bit while walking and she had a difficult time walking up stairs/jumping on my bed. The other problem which was very obvious is that she couldn't seem to urinate. She would go to her litter box about 10 times in a few minutes, but nothing would happen. She would try everywhere and not just in her litter box.

I immediately rang my vet practice and took her in about an hour later.

Now, Wednesday (12th Oct) she is still there. She has had her blood tested, ultra sound and she has been opened up to see if they can physically see anything. But they don't know what is wrong with her - £900+ later I am getting increasingly stressed and annoyed that they can't make her better.

They did find lumps in her intestine and have done a biopsy - results should be back either later today or tomorrow, but otherwise she seems okay and there is nothing obvious that seems wrong (apart from being unable to support herself on her back legs and just urinating on the spot).

She is eating fine and has been on a drip since Monday after her surgery. She is hydrated so they will not be continuing with the drip. She is bright and alert but reacts when her tummy area and tail are touched. She is fine with myself and the staff at the surgery touching her back now - although this has only been since today. They are telling me she seems slightly better.

But I am scared. Not only because she is not insured and I can't even begin to think how I can afford these bills (at the moment with my mother and partner's help we can pay this), but they suggested referring her to a specialist and possibly doing an MRI scan - which I know I cannot afford and can't get financial help because I am not on benefits.

They said their best bet is some kind of nerve damage, but it's frustrating me when every time they ring (up to 4/5 times a day) they say, "We are confused," "We don't know what's wrong," etc.

Please, if any of you can give me some advice or point me in the right direction I would be extremely grateful. She is my first cat and my first pet, I can't stand not having her at home with me and the thought of there being something wrong with her which no one can figure out.. it's just awful.

I'm not sure what else to say, but I will try and answer any questions.

Thank you

I'm sorry your cat & you are dealing with this

Is there a trained animal physiotherapist that can assess your cat? Nerve issues can sometimes be a result of the spine misaligned or a very tight muscle pinching a nerve etc. Someone trained in animal chiropractics, intramuscular stimulation, acupuncture, or proper animal massage therapies might be able to offer some relief.

Did the vet find any inflammation in the bladder or urinary tract? Any crystals or stones in the bladder or urine? Did the blood/urine tests show signs of kidney insufficiency?

If they are still unsure of the cause, are they willing to call in another vet for a 2nd opinion or you can always opt to take her to someone else yourself.

Ask your vet if they offer/will accept a payment plan, that way you can manage the vet bills better especially if a trip to the specialist is in order.

for the biopsy results

Surgery with no idea what is wrong, after a very short period of observation seems like an extreme measure. What was life threatening? Was her bladder not draining? If they didn't find anything how come she is doing ok now?

I think that you need to find a new Vet.
