Losing Fur On My Cats Arm?
It started about 2 and a bit months ago, it started off as though it was shaved, and eventually it started to get a bit larger. It doesnt look like its fleas or mites or ring worms because i dont see any mites on his fur or worms, but i did see a red line almost like a cut but it wasnt bleeding. Now it looks like an area with some fur missing. I went to the vet before and he gave me a bottle of surolan, apparently its supposed to take away fungul infections or something. It doesnt seem like its helping. I'm scared that if i bring my cat to the vet , that he will have to do a million tests to check if he has allergies or ring worms because it will cost alot of money. I also checked online about a spray called Hydrocortisone spray. Anyways i hope you guys can help me before i go back to the vet. Also, there are parts of the arm were it almost looks like it has oil on the fur so it makes the fur spikey looking, i'm not sure if its actually because my cat is losing fur or if its the ointment thats making it look spikey, and it seems like there is a bit of dander on the area, anyways any help would be appreciated!
Here are some pictures That is when the ointment isnt on but i wiped off the area with a damp cloth That is when the ointment is on and rubbed onto the area. |

Did you check for fleas? Looks like flea bites to me. I know it's hard to see fleas on a black cat. Have you noticed any flea dirt, little black specks (which is really flea feces) especially at back of the neck area. If you have a flea comb (very fine toothed) you might comb her thoroughly and see if there are any flease caught in it or flea dirt.
Also, it''s possible it could be an allergic reaction to something, possibly in the food. Generally speaking, any canned food is better than dry kibble. Another possibility is ringworm. Is your cat an indoor cat?----not likellycat picked up something like ringworm. if he has not been in contact with other cats or dogs, as it is contagious. Also people can transmit it. Always good practice if you're petting any other pets, to always wash your hands well before you pet your own. http://www.peteducation.com/article....1+2134&aid=223 Last edited by catlover2; May 6th, 2010 at 11:58 PM. hmm if it was fleas, do you think using a flea and tick shampoo would kill the fleas off?? or would i have to get a flea comb as well? also i thought it was the dry kibble too, because i've been feeding him only dry kibble for a while now, maybe around an year. So for the past week ive been feeding him both wet and dry to see if it would help. Umm about the ring worms, i dont think it would be because ive seen photos of what you are talking about and it doesnt look like my cat has that. It just looks like my cat has been licking fur off his own arm to the point where you can see his skin or like someone cut some of his fur off. Anyways thanks for the help! ill try and give him a bath tonight with a flea and tick shampoo from sergeant's tonight.

I think that Surolan is an oily looking ointment. The oily "look" and "spiky" fur is likely due to that. Same thing happened to our kitty when he had Surolan for his ears. What a mess he was, poor thing...

So did you found out what it was? Because I just found out the exact same thing on my cat today, but the spot where the fur is missing is smaller than your cat's and is always wet too (not sure if is because of licking or if it's a cut or something like that...). Would really appreciate your help.
