Hard lump on my dog's tail

My 4 years old Male dog, George strated to grow this very hard about 1/2 inches lump on this tail. We took him to our vet today and she told us that she wants to do a surgery to remove the lump... She didn't know what it was and told us it might be some sort of cancer or cyst???

My husband & I came back home just holding on to our little Geroge and I started to cry....

I hope this is really nothing, I am trying to fnid some information on web but no luck.
