First cut???

Is it too early to cut the grass?
when is it best?
my grass has really grown this past week, but i wonder is it still too early,

anyone know?

My hubby cut our grass Friday morning. Just the backyard - the front yard doesn't need it yet. He likes to think he knows what he's doing. He has already fertilized too.

Oh you have a lawn king at home too? lol... Mine arregated (sp??), fertilized and tore up some weeds. So far he has not cut the grass.

I don't know if you should or not. Mine is also growing like crazy.

Ha, ha, definitely a lawn king. We will be aerating (sp?) our lawn shortly too. The people that do it for us called the other day and said they will be around in the next couple of weeks. Our backyard is quite well fertilized by Sam. That must be why it was ready to be cut and the front wasn't. J/k we get more sun back there.

As long as your grass is long enough to cut, it's okay to cut. Of course, you could cut it if it isn't long enough, but that'd be kind of wierd...

You can cut the grass any time of the year you can get the lawnmower to it. As a matter of fact, you don't want to go by the season, but rather the length. If the grass grows too long before you cut it, you risk damaging it. You should never cut more than one third it's lenght, so if you've let it get too long, you should raise your mower slightly, then cut it again in a few days. That being said, if you wait too long only once or twice a few times a year, then the risk of hurting the grass is relatively low.

I just picked our lawnmower up yesterday, I'll be cutting it for the first time this year on Saturday. Hopefully the grubs will stay away this year. Being anal about the lawn, I was not a happy camper last year watching my lawn recede like a middle aged man's hair line.

Ooops. Just thought of something else. You want to make sure your yard is dried from the winter. That's the main reason to wait. If your yard is still wet, and therefore, probably soft, you can leave rut marks in the ground. Also, the mower will sink, and cause you to cut lower than you probably intended, possibly even scalping the lawn.

We've cut our grass twice already
