I could use some help here...
I am trying to gather some information for my BSL group. I need information on working dogs.
Basically I need to gather some numbers on dogs that work, ie. therapy dogs, SAR dogs, drug sniffing, bomb sniffing, etc. Preferably dogs that are not usually thought of in that role. Like pit bulls, rottweilers, bouviers, ridgebacks, GSD's, etc that might fall into a viscious breed catagory. Thanks, Sandi

I haven't really sat down and figured out exactly what I need, but basically people with "viscious" breed dogs that work to benefit their community.
At this point, I would love names, breed and "job" and cities that the dog works in. As I get this going, I may need more info. The goal is to point out what type of services these dogs perform for their community that the community may not want to lose.

Mustn't forget the Rotts!
Rottie SAR dog: Gunnar ----------------------------------------------- In 1999 a 5-year-old rottweiler police dog named Caesar leapt into the path of a bullet, when he tried to disarm a man threatening a schoolyard full of children. Caesar later died of his wounds, but not before his partner Constable Randy Goss and other officers captured the man. Caesar was awarded the Ralston Purina Service Dog of the Year award. ------------------------- And saving the best for last, a bunch of great Rottie stories. HERE! |

Cool reading!
Sandi, I just remembered; the Genessee County (where I live) ER vet has a resident Pit who meets & greets in the waiting room. Her main function is donating blood there...I think she was a shelter rescue. Cooper's a registered therapy dog, but hasn't been doing it since last spring, mostly at a nursing home. He's so aloof with new people he just wasn't the best at it. He's a natural with children though; I've thought about trying him with the group that takes dogs to schools & libraries to have the kids read to them. Somehow that's supposed to help children relax & read better. Have you thought about contacting some of these dog therapy-type groups for info on their "demon breed" dogs?

That and I found a therapy dog discussion board. I have a screaming headache, so I will probably be going to lie down right now, but I will be back on in a little while I am sure.
And yes, I will try to remember to send you those pics of Cooper!

I'm not sure this is helpful or not. Dalmatians are vicious but they are biters and have gotten a bad reputation for biting. They are hyper and powerful. A lot have been dumped in HS's because of this.
I found a web site that these people use the dogs as therapy dogs. Which is amazing if you knew what they're temperment is like. I'm not sure this help's you decide. http://home.att.net/~dakotadalmatians/ |

I don't know if this will help but this weekend I was watching "Dogs with jobs". They featured a beautiful pit bull who was an amazing search and rescue dog. The lady who owned and worked with this dog said that pit bulls were exceptional for this kind of work because they don't tire, like the commonly thought of hound dogs. They showed a mock rescuse that took place over 8 or 9 hours and this dog kept going. Checking everything from abandoned houses to water canels, through the forest and through the city. They made quite a point out of really laughing at the "pit bull sterotype". They showed this unbeielvable caring and intelligent dog, doing an amazing job and people dramatically running away when they saw him, off leash.
Well if this didn't help your research it is an interesting story anyway I think!!!!! |
