Micro chipping
I picked up an estimate today for Chloe's spay on the 19th and I had asked to have micro chipping added in as well. I have not chipped any of my kitties but it has not really seemed to a problem...they have absolutely no interest in the doors and I have never worried about an escape in the 9 years they have been here.
Chloe however comes from the mean streets and although at the moment she is more than happy to remain in a nice warm bed and not go back outside to the cold, I worry that she may try to run in the warmer weather when the patio door is opening regularly. The micro chip was quoted at $80.00, $60.00 with my discount. I was wondering how many people have had this done and if they feel it was a good decision. I have heard in the past stories about it being an increase risk for cancer, but I have also seen that the first thing my vet did when I brought Chloe in as a stray was scan her. I am concerned about having it done as an office visit later, that it may be painful and having done while she is out from anesthetic seemed kinder. How does everyone feel about chipping?

I have 2 cats that are microchipped. Zoey was done at the spca and Patches was done at the same time as her spay and cost an extra $45. I saw Zoey get done and she did give a high pitched meow so it had to have hurt, that's why I had Patches done while she was "out". Both cats run for the door when anyone comes or goes so that's why I wanted to have them microchipped. I haven't heard of any cancer risk.

Hi QMC,
I think micro-chipping Chloe is a great idea! And an even better idea to do it while she is under... the microchip is the size of a piece of rice so the needle is large. None of my dogs created too much of a fuss, but I can imagine it hurt! I have never heard of a cancer risk, but I have heard of the chip moving. I still think they are a great idea. I volunteer at a humane society and the 1st thing we do when a stray comes in is microchip them. I think its a efficient way to reunite a lost pet with its owner (granted someone has to actually THINK of checking for it!), although it seems as if it is standard practice in most vet clinics and SPCA's. Let us know how she does!!

All of my guys are chipped, cause you just never know if they get out where they might end up. My vet only charges $40, but was free when I got them their shots, or spay/neutered. $80 sounds kinda high. My guys all wear breakaway collars too with tags.

sounds kinda high ....last ones I had in July were $35.00 at the vets..again only good if someone thinks to read them..the vets don't do it on a new patient which imo sucks...more lost pets would be found if it were a common practice but let's not get me going on that one!

I wouldn't have a cat who wasn't microchipped. Although the kitties haven't gotten outside to date, you CAN NEVER predict what can happen in the future.

I too microchip all my pets, there are so many reasons to. It also costs $45 here, i have never heard of it costing $80, but it would be a good idea if you can get it done when she is under, the needle is much larger than a vaccine, and although its more painful, worth it! Good luck!

Micro-chipping is a wonderful thing, like mentioned you just never know and we all know how collars can come off or tags can break off. Also a dishonest person can't get away with saying the animal is theirs when you have proof of a chip.
My cats never ever go outside but I have them chipped, they were $15.00 each, only because I worked at a clinic at the time. I just had Autumn(dog) done and it was $75.00. It was during an office visit so she was awake, didn't seem to bother her to much, just a surprised look on her face. If the vet is good at it (meaning quick and pinches the skin for a few seconds first to numb the area a bit they don't notice it to much, but I would have liked it to be done during her spay).

Things I've heard about microchipping:
- They do migrate and may not be found; - I've heard of some rare complications, including death; - Biggest prob seems to be that there are many (5 or more) chip manufacturers out there and each has its own chip reader. I don't think there are many shelters, or vets, that can afford to have all of the readers. - Still, prob can't hurt (complications are rare) but your pet has to be 1. found first, 2. brought to a shelter/vet, 3. hope they have the appropriate reader and, 4. the data on the chip is up to date (you may have moved), the chip is able to be found, and data not corrupted. That does seem expensive for a microchip. We just adopted a kitty yesterday at the Montreal SPCA. The adoption fee (or donation) was 135 dollars- that included neutering and microchipping.
We don't have him yet, he's being fixed on Tuesday. I didn't think of taking a pic with my phone but I'll post some when I get him. There were a LOT of adopted kitties awaiting spaying or neutering, I'm happy to say. I'm planning to get a young female kittie to keep him company. Uh, sorry for posting my stuff on your thread, quincymycat. |

Both of our dogs are chipped. The breeder had that done. If they had not had it done by the breeder, they would not have been done by me.
None of our cats have been chipped nor will they be. I have a fundamental problem with putting a foreign object under their skin. Call me crazy, but I don't agree with it, therefore if it's my decision I will not do it. clm |

Gee thanks Chris.....another shot at Markham. Markham used to be a small town..remember????
I thought $80.00 sounded high, because I was thinking about it for my others earlier and it was no where near that high...but am I wrong in remembering that there used to be a monitoring fee at one time too? The breeder I got the Maines from used to microchip and s/n before leaving the cattery, but she stopped chipping just before Milo came home because she said her research showed there may be potential danger to the cat having it implanted. I really do not exaggerate when I say those guys really have no desire to leave a climate controled enviroment so I was not too worried about them. ADT has the number of cats in their records in case of a fire and to look under the bed where they most likely would be. Hopefully, in the worst case scenerio, that will help. Chloe on the other hand, was brought in from outside and may try to make a break, so that was why I thought she should be done. The price given to me was by some receptionist that put the info into the computer and it spit out a print out. It was a Saturday and I did not even know that employee which for me is odd. I am sure if I speak with my vet, the price will come down, with her, it usually does. She is so sweet.

I have micro chipped all my pets and think it is a great idea.
Additionally, I have a human friend who inserted a microchip under his skin (he is geeky and thought it was cool) and he said it did not hurt too badly. Like you, though, I did get one of my pets done while they were under anesthetic for something else, might as well..

Wow i have payed under 30 for all 3 of the chips..... I think its a really great idea! u never know if the cat maybe do gets out one day but if so u can proof its urs! My dogs wear their tags on a collar so if they found no one has to read the chip UNLESS the person who found them is hiding the chip!

I had both my cats microchipped as kittens. Don't remember the cost now as it was 5 yrs. ago. They didn't seem bothered when it was inserted, as there doesn't seem to be that much feeling in that area, and it only took a few seconds. Altho they're both indoor cats, you never know when someone might leave a door open. I do know that when so many pets were lost because of Katrina, the ones that were microchipped had a better chance of being reunited with their owners. Last summer we had a tornado go thro Woodbridge south of where we live that left a trail of destruction, so one never knows what may happen.
