Some pics of the new koi

They were spawning today, made a right mess of everything. I wasn't expecting them to spawn this year, but I now know I have at least one female and which one she is.....the only ones I don't know the sex of yet are the 2 little butterfly koi, and they're still in hiding.

Beautiful koi!! I love the colours on them. Too bad they had to muck up the water by spawning but at least you know they feel comfy enough to do it. Or will fish do it anyway?? I know nothing about spawning fish except for the Mill Dam in Owen Sound where I used to go every year to watch the salmon migrate to their spawning bed.

Yes, the crappy winter and me not keeping the pumps running. A mistake I will never make again.

Thanks 14+. The two butterflies are beautiful too. A pure white and a white and yellow. Hopefully I'll be able to get pics of them sometime soon.
Yes, they have to feel comfortable in their surroundings to spawn.

Well, the koi will eat as many of the eggs as they can, and that's a good thing. I don't want more than 10 koi in this pond, so I'm sitting at 7 now....3 or 4 max is all I would be able to keep of the offspring, so I'd have to rehome the rest. Usually some babies from each spawn survive.

I can't remember, was it you W4R that was so wanting me to get a white butterfly? Hubby hates butterflies, but he wasn't with me when I got the fish, so I figured 2 butterflies were a must. I hope they get over being scared soon so I can see them more. Little fish take a little while to come around, but they'll likely start following the bigger fish around in a few weeks.

My old gang spawned once last spring, but it got cold immediately after they did, so no eggs hatched.

I know, I loved their names too. Even though I found out that Lucy was really a male. At least with 5 of the 7 I know that one is a female and the other 4 are male, so I can get the gender specific names right.

they hatch in 4 days usually, so I'll be watching for the little monsters. Will take a month before they're big enough to catch a pic of likely.

Wow! 4 days! That's pretty quick! That must be why no one throws baby showers for fish...

Pretty exciting, though! I never thought about koi having babies!

Usually just little thinner than pencil lead size black things swimming around at first, they do colour up fast. I should see colour on them once they are big enough to not strain my eyes to find them.

Too cold to look. They'd be mighty small and hiding in amongst the plants anyway. I'll give it another week or 2 before I try to seriously look for any.

Beautyfull kois.
Could I ask you where you got them. I have two large ponds but had an accidental contamination last year and all my kois died.
I am looking to replace them.
Thankx

I'm sorry you lost your fish.
I got mine at at Humber Nurseries, which is a long way from where you are. I wasn't looking for high quality show fish, I just wanted mutts. Beautiful enough for me but a little easier on the wallet. Still cost me over $500.00 for 7.
If you're looking for good quality koi that can be shipped to you, you could go to Canadian Koi and Pond. They have a website, have high, low and medium end koi and have very good quarantine and keeping practices. They're in Newcastle ontario, but they ship.
You could find some websites for koi clubs in Ottawa and they may be able to direct you to a reliable source for fish as well.

Well, I've looked for baby fish a few times and haven't spotted any yet. That doesn't mean there aren't any there though. Big pond with lots of hiding places. I only saw both my tiny butterfly koi last evening for the first time since I put them in the pond. They're growing and with growth comes bravery. I hope they start swimming with the bigger fish all the time soon.

I've decided on names finally. Now that I know they're all still there and doing well.
Going with the Archie theme like I had done with some before.

The big gold male is Moose. The female showa is Midge. The Sanke with the red smudge on his head is Archie. The black and white is Reggie. The gin rin tancho is jughead. The yellow and white butterfly is Betty. The pure white butterfly is Veronica.
Hopefully I'll be able to get more pics of them soon.

Cindy
