dewclaw or not dewclaw

Abby will have to go and get spayed very soon. She is now 5 months but one of the questions I have is if I should get her dewclaws removed while she is under? I don't want to turn around and have this done 6 months down the road, and I hate the idea of her being put out for surgury at all, but instead of doing it 2x;s to her,, she I have it done at that point? Should I even worry about her dewclaws?

Ask your vet to evaluate them. One of our dogs had very long, loosely attached dewclaws prone to snagging on things, and were removed. Our other dog's a small and tightly attached, and she still has them. My only issue with the remaining dewies is that the nails on them are SUPER thick and hard to keep trimmed.

I second bendy's advice - My vet said he really prefers to just leave them alone, but if they are loose and at risk of snagging this would be painful and traumatic if it happened...and no one wants that! As long as they're in close to the foot they should be fine to just leave. Your vet will be able to advise when he examines them.

My vet only reccomends it if they are a problem...otherwise they said to leave it.

I have 5 cats one was DE CLAWED before she came to me as a stray.
All the others have had nothing done to their dew claws and, there has never been a problem. As a matter of fact, none of the cats I have ever had as pets have been either again, no problems. However, I agree the best thing to do would be ask your vet.
