Cats, Raw and Questions

Those of you that feed cats raw, do you supplement with Taurine? I'm getting conflicting reports, with some saying its readily available in meat and others saying it must be supplemented. Do you supplement with other things?
I feed chicken and turkey pieces so far, as this is the only RMB's I can chop up into small pieces. Also I add in liver( trying to get them to eat heart, they don't like it, and am gonna try kidney tomorrow). I also give them eggs, muscle meat, canned salmon and yogurt ocasionally. Does this look ok? What do others feed? I know this topic may have already been beat to death, forgive me

Also has anyone read Kymthy Schultz's new book on nutrition for cats?

I know beef has taurine, but didn't think poultry did. I feed my fosters prepared raw, which contains liver and supplement them with one feeding of Wellness Kitten canned per day.

All meat has taurine. But levels of taurine differ greatly, even within the same animal. Turkey breast isn't that high in taurine but turkey leg meat is pretty high in taurine.

I don't supplement, but I make sure they get a lot of chicken heart, beef heart, and red meat. And if I'm feeding a lot of chicken or turkey I try to feed 'dark' meat since it does have higher taurine levels.

Thanks! I'm gonna try to get them to eat heart, and I already give them beef and turkey leg meat.

My research concluded the same thing. Also taurine is supposed to deterioriate if exposed to air, so ground diets may be low in taurine.

I'm feeding a BC local company's prepared ground raw, it includes muscle meat, bone (except the bison/beef and lamb has no bone), heart, liver, wild salmon oil, cod liver oil and full spectrum vit e.

I'm not supplementing w/taurine, my cat's homeopath & homeopath vet said at her age (17 years old) and w/CRF she doesn't need any added taurine and only needs red meat once a week. The specialty raw food store I shop at recommends younger cats have red meat 3-4 times per week.

I'm also supplementing with extra wild salmon oil to help w/CRF related constipation/dry poop but will also help w/any constipation not just from kidney failure, she also gets a few other CRF specific supplements and she gets NuCat vitamins.

Thanks for that Rainbow, it really shows that cats should be on a raw diet.

I use taurine with the raw chicken meat recipe I prepare for my 2 cats. I rarely give them beef. I use 6000 mg of taurine for 3 Kg of chicken. I read that freezing meat can affect taurine levels so it is better to add some and the added taurine isn't harmful. I also feed canned Wellness.

Thanks, Rainbow! Those were both really helpful. But it made me a bit more confused. According to the feline future website, cats require 400mg/kg... is that per day? Muscle meat contains about 360 mg/kg, according to them. I wonder how much taurin heart contains.

I finally tricked them into eating heart today by mixing it in with kidney, go figure!

whats my trick??? oysters. uber high in taurine. from what i gather, taurine is higher in the higher use muscles. heart is used a great deal, has oodles of taurine. less used muscles have less taurine. muscles like oysters.... highest taurine.

make sense?? anyone able to find the site i posted last year listing the different levels of taurine found in different body parts of cow, chicken, and different fish and stuff?? im babbling.

i dont supplement taurine. muscle meat has some taurine. i make sure they get 3 high taurine days a week. so when my cats get salmon (ot other fish) they also get oyster/shrimp/clam/etc.

The reason it is confusing when it comes to raw diets and taurine is because ground meat has a lot less taurine than natural, non ground meat.

When you grind meat it loses a lot of its vitamins, including taurine. It also makes it more susceptible to bacteria. That's why it's recommended you give whole pieces of meat and bone rather than ground. Then you know you're giving your puss enough

I did have a great site explaining it all but I can't find it again - sorrys
