Question Guinea Pig talk...

adopted two "brothers" 6wks old...now the one is cooing alot and chasing the other one around alot...wondering what behaviour is exhibited when a FEMALE guinea is calling on a male ?...or do you think this is just normal guinea behaviour? They look like males...but....

check the bums. If they're the same then they're both males

thing with males is that there's a dominance issue, so the one chasing is probably the leader over the one being chased. you have to watch out then that the weaker one gets proper food and he doesn't get bullied out of his share of meals and veggies. Also make sure he doesn't get insured or gets sad. If he does you might have to sepparate them.

picture below is of a female

(i got those pictures off the web)

they could also be chasing each other in a playful manner. Just be careful it's not about aggression or someone could get hurt

When i was younger our neighbour gave me and my mom 2 'male' piggies....
Until Winnie and Pooh had....................... Yup, Piglet!

My dad was not a happy camper bout the situation. He wasnt even consulted about the new additions to the family but then when another one popped out..... He was even more upset He got over it though , and when Piglet died ( he/she was the last one) My dad came home with ....
A new baby guinea pig

We had no idea if it was a male or female... but either way.. its name was Opeecheeco!!!
I'll try to dig up a pic of him/her and post it.
Peechee lived to be 9

thanks you guys!

I appreciate the feedback...It seems as though they are playing, they are purring and chatty...i read somewhere its usually ok to have two male brothers together...but will watch that no one is getting hurt or underfed.. thanks!
and....Ill check them bums once again...they are getting bigger so it might be easier to tell soon.

i think dominance occurs more in a larger group, but you never know, could happen with just 2.

can we see some pictures of your piggies??

Oh and one more thing,
I remember now that Peechee was a male indeed!
The vet had showed us ( when he got sick once) that the best way to tell if its m or f is to gently press a bit just above the "openings" and if a wazoo pops outs.... Yup its a male!

I got a guinea pig from one of my boyfriends before I got any of my other animals. I named 'him' Spazzy-Pig, and shortened it to Spigz. Spigz was a major biter due to improper handling and poor research on my part (I was 15 when I got it.) My new boyfriend (a major rodent lover) has been working with Spigz and the temperment is improving majorly...we also found out that Spigz is really a female. It can be very hard to tell, and we even got her from a petco out of the 'male' tank.

Guinea pig cage and proper handling.

ha ha ha
i love that spigz...!!!
I am trying to handle my new piggies a lot and trying to get them to totally trust me, I run a daycare so I have to be protective of them - and i have to expose them to the group as they are young and then they will be good around kids i hope! My hubby went out and got a bunch of cubes and connectors to make them a new cage, its going to be a mansion lol!! 3 stories! i will attach a pic once its complete!

I'm really loving this thread. Guinea pigs rock.
My brother and his family had two pigs until a few years ago. They used to have them in their laps all the time, the tamest pigs I ever met, just from frequent handling.
And the babies - I know I shouldn't say this, as long as there are pig rescues - are beyond adorable.

oh yeah Guinea pigs are very attached to their owners. Most people wouldn't think so, but guinea pigs know the sound of their owner's voice and are very much in need of human presence. And they can also recognize sounds.

My guinea pig squeaks everytime my mom comes home or my dad or me. She doesn't squeak at anybody else unless that person has been playing with her often enough to be considered a "friend" hehe.
I used to bond with my piggy by taking naps with her on the couch and she'd just lay there all stretched out with her tummy and sleep on her side

But you handle a guinea pig at your own risk. Those small bladders hold a LOT of liquid hehe

Aww this is so cute, the little birthday party makes me want a guinea pig. I used to look after two for my neighbors while they were on vacation and they made the most adorable little squeaks of excitement when I was getting their veggies ready. I don't recall what their gender's were, I think they were supposed to be male. The one they had first chased the other one around but not all the time and they seemed to be fairly content, both lived to about eight years. They did most of the peeing at one end of their pen, so I can see how they would probably like to have a litter box for that.

I'd love to see the mansion when it's done, i've always wanted to build something fun for some little critters
