Question I need information on poison dart frogs

I am thinking about getting a tank of poison dart frogs but I am unsure of a few things. I have read up on them but could still use some advise....

Advise ???

My first advise would be not to...
The mature male, poison dart is only 3/4 of an inch long and while it is not a man eater it can be deadly. The mucous secreted from the skin is laced with a powerfull poison which is lethal enough to kill a man. Natives use the mucous on their spears to kill animals and members of other tribles.
Bad JUJU.
If one were to get out and a dog or cat ate it (awful as they taste) it could easily kill a small pet.

Not worth the irisk in my book.

Dumdizzy12,Why on earth would you want these things, certainly not for companionship or cuddles?
I have never heard of poisoned dart frogs, but the name alone tells me they are not great as a pet and if you are only 12yrs old,I suggest you rethink your choice of pet.

Poisonous frogs are extremely beautiful, as their brilliant colours advertise the fact that they are highly toxic.

No pet store that I have ever seen or heard of would sell such venomous creatures.

What I read on the posion dart frogs is that in captivity they lose their vemon, In fact, it is their diet (a particular ant or plant in the forrest) that gives them the posion which gives them its name. But my main concern would be if one of my cats were to get ahold of them. I would not want my cat to get sick or die. I still have more reading to do first.

By the way, I am not 12. lol.

Sorry about that Dizzy,I thought the 12 stood for 12yrs old
I know now what these froggies are,I've seen them on TV...
Although very beautiful I don't think you should risk having them around, especially with cats....my cats would have a ball trying to catch them out of the tank
But it's up to you...personally I think a tropical animal belongs in the tropics not in a tank

The fact that they lose their venom in captivity would make it seem they are NOT getting what they need in the way of nutrition. I would imagine they would lose their bright colours too.

Please research carefully on the care of these animals, and if you decide to get them, make sure you do everything you possibly can to maintain them properly.

My concern is that many exotics are taken from the wild for the pet trade, so find out where these frogs are coming from.

Personally, I would never get a pet that was not BRED in capitivity.

We have a bearded dragon and have had cuban tree frogs in the past. You really have to know what your getting into. Special UV lights, heating lights, heating pads, protien powders etc. They are different pets thats for sure but if not cared for right they don't last long. As for poison dart frogs not for me, make sure you talk to a reptile store rep. that knows what their talking about, here in Toronto there is Reptilia, they breed and care for many lizards, frogs and snakes or talk to a handler at your local zoo. All my reptiles have been locally grown.

You're probably lured by the "dangerous" animal as a pet thing? I know what you mean. I keep Green Spotted Puffer fish.

I was thinking about getting some frogs for a 20g tank, but the thing is, frogs are boring. They spend most of their time burried in the mud. Not very interesting.
If I were you I would look into an Asian Red Clawed Crab. I have 2 living in a small inexpensive tank on my desk. They are very cool.

Can you give me more information on Asian Red Clawed Crabs? How much do they cost? What do they eat? Is the food they eat expensive? Do you feed it live, dead, or flaked? Are they expensive to keep? Do they require a large tank? Do they require a heater or light?

Sorry if it seems like I'm being nosy, but I've just got to learn more about these crabs! They sound very interesting, and I might get one if they seem right for me.

Thats true... I never thought about it that way. If they were bred in captivity it would be fine though. I like my pals, especialy fish and other water creatures.

Spoiled,I did not mean too rag you,we all have our quirks.I too like water creatures but prefer to see them free...but if they have been born in captivity I suppose it's ok,as long as you know how to care for them.

My crabs don't live in a jar. They have a pretty large aquarium for 2 2inch crabs with a heater and better water parameters then that of the stuff I drink. And I think it's a lot better then them being eaten by sea gulls on the beach.

How much do they cost?
About $6 each

What do they eat?
I feed mine crab pellets mainly. Occasionally they get left over bloodworms from my puffers. And plant clippings from my other aquariums. None of that is expensive.

Do they require a large tank?
I would never keep more then 2 in a 10g tank. But you could also get other fish as long as they were fast and didn't like sleeping on the bottom. (or else they'll be dinner)

Do they require a heater or light?
I don't have a heater on my tank, but i keep an eye on the temp. They like 72-77F. I have a cheap ergonomic light over top of the tank. So no expensive hood or anything. And a cheap Aquaclear filter. Crabs are messy eaters.

Are they expensive to keep?
Putting aside the start up cost of the tank, no. you'll have to buy a $5 can of food like every 6 months.

Just keep in mind that crabs are incredible escape artists. I had to cut my own tight fitting plexi glass lid so they couldn't escape. (being out of water for more then 4 hours will kill them)

Search for "sesarma bidens" on google and you'll find a ton of hits.
