I've used this method with Kaedyn and it worked wonders.
He was constantly jumping on the window ledge and barking at anything that moved (and sometimes things that were still!). What I did was, I put a piece of cardboard along the ledge (counter in your case). The cardboard was placed partly off the ledge/counter. Then I put a can filled with rocks (and taped on the top) and placed it on the cardboard. Whenever he hit the cardboard, he would automatically knock the can off and get startled. It worked incredibly well. In fact, once, he was going ballistic and having one of his "barking episodes". He was running around the living room, barking his little head off and just jumped about a foot off the ground but moved just in time to avoid hitting the ledge. This was after I took the can off but it worked so well that he remembered, even when he was all worked up. |

This is what we did, on a recommendation from my vet.
You get some cheap mouse traps. You set them on the counter ready to go. While you are there working away, get something to set it off. It will make a really loud noise and of course the trap will "jump". Mine usually ended up on the floor. I would make this HUGE scene etc. What I did then was leave the trap unhooked, on the counter or table and every once in a while I would pick it up and drop it and make a big commotion. Believe me, they won't go near something that they think bites. Never had a problem again. This falls in the same line as stringing some pop cans together with pennies in them. When the dog jumps on the counter, the cans fall and make a racket. They learn that jumping up on the counter etc. means not good. Good luck! Heather and her 3 Golden Girls |

GREAT idea with the cardboard
I'd hesitate with rocks cause some dogs like to put them in their mouths but you can put tin cans on the cardboard when they fall on a ceramic or tile floor they make LOTS of noise and dogs hate it

In a loud voice, I used to say 'NO' to Chocolate.
if started to walk away sort of smug, I'd go to him, tilt his face towards mine, and say it quite sternly again 'NO' with GLARE in my eyes. my face was no more than 4 inches away from his face... needless to say, he stopped. |

Izzy does the same thing, but nothing seems to stop her. She's knocked a heap of glasses off the bench at different times and they have smashed all over the floor and that didn't work. And I can't tell her "NO", cause she will never do it when we are around. The only thing I do now is make sure there is no food left unattended on the bench.

another good "point"
tho when Choco was younger, I had two cats, and it was quite difficult telling Choco he couldn't get up on the counters as the cats did you know how cats are, jump, jump and they're on the counter tops... good luck getting them down w yelling. haha |
