Changes In Dog
Background: about a month and a half ago, I switched my almost 7-year old shihtzu from dry food to wet food (he has a grain allergy so gets grain-free food). Just recently we were away, so he spent a week at a kennel where he has stayed before. Now, in the past two weeks that we've been home, he's been pooping and peeing in the house. Yes, he's had the occasional "accident" in the house before...but this new thing has been an almost daily occurence with him. He's been squating and peeing right in front of me even when he was outside an hour ago!! He has also appeared to loose a bit of weight. Other than the bathroom issue he seems to have the same behaviours & playfulness that he did before. I am perplexed and am looking for advice. Does this require a vet visit?

Yes....please take your shih tzu to see a vet. This is not normal.

While it's not normal behaviour, it could also be the result of kenneling. That said, a vet trip is in order to rule out anything he may have caught at the kennel. If the vet trip comes back clean then you know it's a re-training issue. Good luck to you please keep us posted.

I would bring a stool sample too , to see if your picked up any worms at the
kennel. It sound like your dog was never taken out to pee and poop and got into the habit of doing it inside. Does the kennel made sure all the dogs are up dated on all their shots and been tests or worms? |

I know a lot of folks that have kennelled and their pups come home with a few different behaviours. You have to remember that if you have a place that has an indoor\outdoor run set up they are learning to pee an poop whenever they want and where. Maybe go back to the basics for a couple of days to remind them the routine. Going outside every few hours and monitoring closely until they get it.
I wouldn't rule out a vet visit either just to be sure they haven't picked something up. Good Luck!

Fecal and urinalysis would be the top diagnositics on my list. So yes, vet visit!
