St. Luke, the devil

We got Luke Groundwalker, a 7 month old long-haired dachshund last spring, and immediately dubbed him St. Luke, because he was so very good. His birth family did announce him as "nearly housebroken" which we correctly interpreted as meaning that he had been trained into some bad habits. No problem, we've done that stuff before.

Well, not exactly. St. Luke, now known as Rufie, is a bit difficult to manipulate. He isn't very interested in eating or drinking, thinks that most treats are a bore, and pretty much doesn't like toys. I know he sounds boring, but he is a great love, and we want good things for him. We spend endless hours watching to make sure that he has taken care of his business outside before we come in. Bless the rascal, if he wants to, he will just hold it until he can have some privacy (usually about 30 seconds) inside, and then he feels much better. I don't. We were delighted to find that he had been trained to self-feed.

How do we persuade this young man to work with us. Or get him to the point that he has no choice but to go when he is outside? He's a lovely guy, and we'd love to be able to relax with him.

FYI, he is the 7th long-haired dachshund we have had in 45 years, and we love the breed, but this one is so very different from the others. Beautiful, smart, and evidently blessed with cast iron innards.

Thanks for any useful advice.
Betsy

Hi Betsy ~ phew ! long post ! Can I suggest that you divide up your questions and post in both "On Topic" and "training" ?

And also ~ I'll warn you now. We're crazy for pix (like to see who we're talking to and about ~ what can I say???) so don't surprized if you get DEMANDS....

Pictures!!! Did someone mention pictures?!

Sounds like you've got a stubborn fella on your hands. I think MMM has a good suggestion--you'll get loads more advice if you post your question in the Training forum.

Welcome to the board, Betsy. Looking forward to hearing more stories about your little furry character...also to seeing some pictures!
