Just a few more
And fewer weeds too! I've been out trying to get rid of as many weeds as I can. Still have lots to go but then I have lots of flower beds too.
Lily My Jacob's Ladder going to seed. I am going to have to start collecting soon. Anyone interested in seed? Torch lily (the orange and yellow ones), Coral Bell stil going strong, and the little purple and pink flowers in the background are perennial Salvia just getting started. I haven't cleared weeds out of this area yet.

A veritable field of Rudbeckia, Black Eyed Susan, Shastas and Calliopsis.
From a different angle. Cat Mint in front, Yarrow on the left, Hypericum on the right. And that's it for now.

I love your 'field', 14+ Everything is blooming so nicely! And your lilies are sure vibrant!!
About the Jacob's ladder--do you know if they transplant well? I have one in the hummingbird garden, but it's being surrounded and choked out by purple phlox. I'd like to move it but I'm scared I'll kill it if I try Have you ever tried moving an established one?

That's a hard one to answer hazel. The ground here is clay based. I have added some better top soil and three way mix in the areas where my Jacob's Ladders are. Two did well when I transplanted. One didn't. It is still there. Just struggling. Interestingly it is in the area that got the most three way mix. I think the ground is too rich for it now. So if your ground is sort of iffy it will probably do ok. I have a bad habit of planting something and watering it for a couple of days and then forgetting about it. I'm always surprised what comes back up.

Propagating Jacob's Ladder;
Clump forming Jacob's Ladder is easy to divide in spring or fall. Plant divisions 18" apart. It can also be grown from seed sown outdoors in the fall or sown in pots in the spring. Keep spring-planted seedlings in their containers through the growing season, mulch them through the winter, then set them out in the garden the following spring. They like moist, average to rich soil in full to partial shade. Hazel...do hummingbirds like Jacob's Ladder? If so, I would be more than happy to adopt some of your seeds 14+!

Oddly enough, I have that stupid wild morning glory and 2 feeders hanging near it but also have another feeder hanging openly on my clothesline that the hummers have taken interest in. The open feeder doesn't have anything flowers around it but that's the one the birds are flocking to--even the orioles!
Would love to have some or your Jacob's Ladder seeds but can't make any guarantees that I'll remember where I planted it and it'll be dead by next summer!

Send me your addy and when the seeds are ready I will send you some. It will probably be a couple of weeks yet. The pods are just turning a bit brownish now.
When you see something ferny looking shooting up that's the Jacob's Ladder. It's a neat plant even without flowers.

I've never seen any hummers at my Jacob's ladder, either, but it's so surrounded by phlox by the time they arrive that they may not even know it's there!
So do you transplant in fall, then, 14+? If a clump can be dug up and separated, I have to believe that I stand at least a modicum of a chance to move it and not kill it! The soil will be the same--I just need to move it a little closer to the fence so it's not smothered. I'll have to remember NOT to add any compost when I do.

I did mine in early summer. Either or. It doesn't seem to matter. Just make sure to give it ample time to get established before frost.

Good point... Maybe I should gather the seed off this plant before I kil...er...transplant it.
I've actually had much better luck with bigger plants, either transplanting or dividing, than with seedlings...although this year I have an almost frightening amount of sproutage! I suppose I should thin everything out, eh?
