Unhappy MY GERMAN SHEPHERD has an enlarged uterus.. Help me !!!

my 7 year old GSD bitch has an enlarged uterus according to the X-Ray report....the
local vet has advised surgical removal of the uterus and the ovaries to prevent symptoms of pseudo-pregnancy every time she comes in heat...
i am distressed for i do not want my bitch to get involved in complications and also do not know what the after effects of such an operation involve...
Kindly advise me what to do.. and how to proceed ?

Is it advisable to get her operated here becos the vet here does not have any assistants and himself does not have enough experience...
is an operation abroad (in Canada) advisable ... for i think better facilities exist and proper care is taken...

Where are you located? Is there no other vets around that can do this surgery?

Pyometra is actually the term used.Your dog has a uterus infection. Was she just diagnosed with it?She definately needs surgery. It's bit more complicated then a spay. This is why spaying is so important.

A spay, while major surgery, is NOT a complicated operation. IF your dog does have pyometra, she will die without the surgery.

Your right that a spay is not a complicated operation..But,having the uterus and overies removed is a bit more complicate. No matter what, the dog needs the operation.

Are you breeding her?

Thanks

I stay in a small town in India and i am moving to Delhi soon. I just wanted to know if i could go ahead with the surgery. However if it were a complicated one , i would have got the surgery done in Canada where my uncle and aunt live. Thank you very much for the advice.

I understand that you don't have the resources there that we have here in Canada and the U.S.

The most dangerous part of the surgery for a 7 yr old dog is the anesthetic. If the vet doesn't have the right kind, and if your dog has any other health problems, it could be bad for her.

Make sure the vet does blood tests first, to rule out any kidney, liver etc. malfunctions.

Good luck!
