hematoma
My 5 month old goldendoodle just got spayed 7 days ago. Today I was petting her and found a large lump on the side of her stomach. I took her into the vet and he said he thought it was a hematoma and not to be worried. He drained it and said to come back Friday. Then, he checked her sutures and said that they were also infected. So needless to say, we're leaving the sutures in for a while longer until they heal better. Has anyone ever heard of a hematoma on the side of the stomach? I'm just sick with worry!

Delila had difficulties after her spay. She developed a large fluid sack along one side of her sutures. She was put on a course of anti-inflammatories to reduce the fluid and was right as rain in 4 days. This was a result of a reaction to the dissolving sutures internally.

Chloe got a hematoma after she was spayed. The incision became infected too. She was on antibiotics and had to wear a cone. It took a few months for it to completely disappear.

I don't know if it's obvious or not, but "hematoma" is a fancy doctor word for "bruise"... It's normal if you damage tissue there can be a bruise forming.

Well, a hematoma is more of a major bruise, but it is still just a bruise, like Prin said. What you'd call a bruise is usually rupture of tiny vessels (capillaries); to get a large collection of blood like your pup has (hematoma), there must have been a larger vessel nicked during the procedure that kept bleeding into the tissues. In certain locations (inside organs or around an airway) they can be dangerous, or if there is grand scale loss of blood. But a hematoma can form anywhere you have a broken vessel.
To keep this short, you did the right thing. If you notice the lump returning, go back to the vet. Did you get an antibiotic for the infection?

hematoma
Yes, I did get 6 days worth of antibiotics....and we return Friday for a follow up visit. The lump is still there, but has reduced some. The infection is my main concern now. I am now cleaning it every hour or two and rubbing some aloe vera on it. It seems to finally be sealing a little more. The oozing is not near what it was this morning (the worst of the oozing was this morning). I am hoping she is on the mend. My poor doodle!
