Angry Pyometra

Last Saturday Twiggy was rushed to the hospital to have her reproductive system removed. She developed Pyometra.

Now I'm all for adopting from a rescue.....but I'm pretty damn mad when they insist your pet was spayed.....and 6 years later, the scar was a Cesarean scar and not a spay. She could have died. She was never spayed.

So I hate to write this on a site where we support rescue - but some rescues are crap. They are run by well meaning but incompetent people.... who do not have the skills/resources/ to get the relevant info on your pet.

So like anything else....the burden is on you to research the rescue. (Just as an FYI the rescue in question was never associated with this site)

Oh, no. Poor Twiggy!! How is she doing?

I don't know anything about the rescue in question, and I'm not defending them, but as you and your vets have found out, it's awfully hard to tell a cesarean scar from a spay scar. If the rescue got her as a stray, or if her owners weren't forthcoming, the rescue people, and even their vets, might easily mistake the two. And often, resources are tight enough that the rescue might not be able to afford a test (say, an ultrasound) on every cat to make sure which type of scar it is.

Glad that you were able to get fast help with Twiggy, and hope she is recuperating well now.
We googled it and read up on it and it sounds very frightening.

Thanks for the support everyone! Such a scary episode. SCARIER, because we told the vet Twiggy was spayed. Had the vet not insisted on an ultrasound (after we suggested that maybe she had a botched spay because she still shows signs of heat) ; She would have probably been sent home with antio-biotics for a bladder infection - and likely died.

Now that I got all that out - Twiggy is doing great - she's such a l'il trooper!!

Thank heavens for suspicion! People call me paranoid, but a little bit of suspicion now and then can be a good thing! Good on you and your vet for figuring it out!

So happy Twiggy's doing so well! Does she have to wear a Dreaded Elizabethan Collar while she's recovering? (JD shudders and hopes not--and sends along a crooned and caterwauled recovery song for her! I hope you have ear plugs...wish I did ) Heal fast, Twiggy!
