Baytril side effects?

My 15 yr old, 4lb Yorkshire terrier was given baytril for 8 days for his kidney infection and was fine during those days. While he was on baytril, he was more relaxed, he ate a lot, sometimes a lil picky, he barked, alert and was a little wobbly.Baytril helped his infection because he wasn't straining anymore.

However, 5 days after his final dose of baytril, he was lethargic, seemed exhausted, laying down more, no barking and lost weight. Three days after that, I noticed when I touched his face he had no reaction. Like he didn't feel me touching him. Then 2 days after that, he had a seizure.

I read most of those are side effects of baytril but those side effects didn't occur during his baytril treatment, it occurred 5 days after his final dose. Is this normal?

It's not normal, but I suppose it could be possible. It takes a while for any drug to work its way totally out of the system. Have you talked to your vet about the possibility? Or perhaps asked about there being an underlying second condition that might have caused the further symptoms?

Poor little guy... I hope he recovers fully!

Our vet is useless, not very informative and money hungry. All they can say is that 'he's getting old.' As for underlying conditions... He has been showing signs of deafness and dementia since early this year. He had his first seizure when he fell off our couch in April. Ever since then, the vet prescribed him Valium to prevent future seizures and to help his anxiety. He's always been an anxious dog especially when my mother goes out and nothing worked for his anxiety (we tried everything). Valium never really worked unless he was already tired.

Sounds like it's time to get a second opinion...if only to see if someone can suggest a treatment that works better.
