Comedian Funds Abused Dog's Care
Comedian Funds Abused Dog's Care
The Associated Press Friday, May 24, 2002; 6:40 AM ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. –– Buster headed west wearing a cowboy hat and bandanna to hide the wounds the year-old boxer suffered when he was beaten with a claw hammer and apparently left for dead. Standup comedian Elayne Boosler took a personal interest in the dog's welfare. She helped raise more than $5,000 to pay his medical bills and relocation costs, donated $1,000 from a recent Florida show, and paid $269 for Buster's flight Wednesday to an undisclosed location. "He's entered the boxer witness protection program," she said. Authorities said the boyfriend of Buster's former owner attacked his girlfriend and also beat the dog severely, telling a friend to bury the animal. A neighbor discovered Buster two days later, barely alive. Buster lost an eye in the March attack and is nearly blind in the other eye. He suffered a deep forehead gash and a shattered jaw. He spent two months at a veterinary hospital undergoing a series of operations. Boosler said a search is being conducted to find a permanent home for the young boxer-mixed breed after he spends a couple months with a nurse who specializes in helping blind dogs. © 2002 The Associated Press
