Unhappy Bulli`s Urinary Infection

Hi

My Bulli Scarlet has had urinary infections every 6-11 months for the last 2 yrs. Scarlet will be 6 in May. We need help. Without a car we had to relie on an incompetent vet who kept pushing the vet urinary brands ( he sells Royal Canin, Hill`s Science Diet) which she severely reacted to & not offering much beyond Novo-Lexin antibiotics. He even blamed me when her infection re-occured within a month, saying that it was my fault because I "asked" him to keep changing the vet food. For her 2nd infection (after 11 months) she refused outright to eat the vet food. Scarlet would eat once then starve herself until the food was changed etc etc. She survived by eating my food (I am vegetarian). 9 vet food changes in 11 weeks!!! Even vet foods that had nothing to do with urinary prevention/infections. Canned cost $200 a month, out of my reach. She reacted to the food the same way as to her anesthesia when her deformed back legs were reconstructed. It takes MONTHS for the flares ups & side effects to dissipate. All the while she is depressed & lethargic.

The last time, Sept. 07, I had finally received some lost work comp from the SAAQ & we went to the Mtl. DMV. I was hit by a red-light runner a couple of yrs ago. I just finished physio. The Dmv emergency vet/specialists offered more options, like directly taking urine from her bladder. Turns out she had Crystals!!! The Batril seemed to work & I started Scarlet on Natural Factors`s Women`s Cran-Probiotic (approved by her new, Bulli-experienced vet).

This morning she started peeing blood again

I am trying to find a ride to the holistic vet up in Laval, Dr. Guidon (helped create this site). She is normally content, if lonely for other non-racing dogs (non in our area - N.D.G.?) & is not yet in much pain.

Scarlet has been on only kibble/kibble & canned/kibble & home menu (approved by nutritionalist)/home menu & still the infections persist.

Any help?

so you have fed exclusive kibble, then kibble and wet (for how long) and then strictly homemade?? what sort of homemade diet was she on and for how long??

we have a few members (im not one of them!!!) who know a great deal about canine nutrition and how to feed a homemade diet to assist with crystals. sugarcatmom knows BOAT LOADS about cats nutrition, im sure she can help too.

i hope you guys come up with something. oh have you tried a raw, meat only diet?? that may be what you need to try next. to start, whole meats with the bone in it. 10% bone, 10% organ (5% being liver of some sort) and 80% muscle meat. feed 1.5-3% of total body weight daily. think whole prey... try to get as much variety in organs as possible. shop around for deals on meat and such. try to stay under a dollar per pound and it will be cheaper than holistic, high quality kibble.

keep us posted ok??? i hope someone with more experience comes through to help.

Not sure if dog crystals are the same as cat's, but the best thing to prevent cat urinary crystals is lots and lots of water (NO KIBBLE only canned food) and a clean litterbox so the cat will urinate frequently. For a dog I guess it would be consistent, frequent walks . If crystals are left in the bladder for too long, then the crystals get bigger and can cause blockages or even form stones.

Diet may also contribute to the formation of crystals. I think a diet that is low in minerals such as magnesium, phosphorus, etc is essential for those animals who are prone.

Did the vet do a culture to determine the type of crystals your dog has? This is very important because the treatment is different for each type.

Here is a website to check out...

Good luck....I hope you get to the bottom of this soon.

Red face Update - Bulli's Re-Occuring Urinary Infection

Thnx for the advice!

Scarlet started with easing into a raw diet 1 1/2 yrs ago. I had to keep putting it off because of her urinary infection's re-occurence. She is allergic/sensitive to much & is following her specialized diet plan devised by Kilookas, Quebec's (Montreal's, really) only nutritionalist. Dr. Haltrecht is primarily an acupuncturist. I learned the hard way. Hopefully we find a ride soon from Montreal to Laval, to see Dr. Guidon the only? Quebec holistic vet. We can't afford another God-complex vet

I have a friend with a Bullmastiff that used to get UTI's all the time. She finally went to a nutritionist and they switched her to raw diet and she has not had one in over a year now and has found many other improvements in her health and energy level since switching. She also went through all the specialty foods and every other diet imaginable. Good luck

Red face Bulli's Re-Occuring Urinary Infection Cont'd

Thnx but she has been on a raw diet for over a year (with the help of a nutritionalist - www.kilookas.com if interested) & STILL the infections persist. I don't know whitch forum to ask about/find a ride to the holistic vet, Dr. Guidon. He is not far by car but without it is impossible. Conventional meds have failed spectacularly

I couldn't find it  the thing is , if you call "L'ordre des vétérinaires" they will only give you one or 2 holistic vets. Many other vets do holistic but are not registered holistic. Have you call the DMD , there one vet lady who knows a lot about it. (again , I don't remember her name , I made so many phone calls when I was looking for one )

I'm sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

Can you not take her in a cab? Here in BC the cab companies are okay aslong as you mention you have a dog with you

Red face Bulli Urinary Infection Update

Hi

Incase anyone is interested, we managed to find a ride to Dr. Guindon, PQ's holistic vet. $25 instead of $100+ cab fare. Without x-rays or urine analysis he determined that she is trying to pass STONES!!! He thinks that it is a build up of her vaccinations, anesthetics (necessary leg reconstructions, treachea enlargement), & over-prescribed meds since we met. He thinks that her body can't handle the toxin buildup. He claims that there sould be results with his meds within a couple of weeks. I hope that he is right since I can't afford to try again. It's been a week & Scarlet is STILL straining, Sometimes. I have to hope that this works. A red-light runner cost me every-thing/-one else & a loophole means that the SAAQ doesn't have to pay me academic comp. so I need for Scarlet to live so that when I start working min. wage (rest of my life!!!) so she can start to live. I got zip from the SAAQ for "Loss of QUality of Life" since my hitting rock-bottom falls BELOW their norms
I need to be working withinthe next few weeks, so another vet trip won't be possible for some time.
Her surgeries have kept her isolated & dwntwn Montreal landlords aren't (multi-)pet-friendly. Apart from that she is well , if depressed. She spends her time staring at the balcony door, waiting for it to open.

Red face Re: Scarlet

Using university 'Net instead of job hunting so brief. Back pain from red light runner accident so no luck in finding job. Scarlet's pulmonary lesions have flared up again & I fear that she won't live to her 6th birthday, May 2nd  . No money or support. Used all up during my convalescence. Every night is a nightmare. Light sleep only or breathing attacks. No help? in Canada for those in a pinch, unlike the U.S.

Thnx for the thought

Goodbye
