dog won't eat, anemic
My Welsh Corgy suddenly began to lose her appetite, eat dirt, and throw up what little real food she did eat. I took her to the vet, and he told me that her gums were white and that she was anemic. She is now very lathargic, certainly due to not eating, and is getting very thin. The vet is very confused but said that it MIGHT be caused by a rare condition where the dog's red blood cells are "eating each other." He put her on steroids and iron pills temporarily to see if they make her feel any better. This treatment doesn't seem to be working, and now my dog has become too weak to move. What can be the problem?

Could be worms or parasites.
What tests (ie blood, urine) did your vet do? He did test the dog right? |

He did a blood test. The poor thing is so weak. Her gums are white, not pink like they should be. A second opinion is in order, I'm sure. Thanks for the advice!

I had a cat with the same symptoms, and it was caused by a fairly rare parasite. Once proper medication was given, his recovery was very rapid.
I'm sorry I can't remember the name of the parasite, but it destroys red blood cells. My cat tried to eat cat litter, was disoriented and weak, and had vomiting and diarrhea. His gums were white, too. Definitely a second opinion is needed! |
