My catbird has been tormenting me--he's in plain view when he sings, but always nestled in a gap in the spruce or in the deepest shadow of the oak. He's definitely not showing any interest in my grape jelly...sigh.

I hope you have better luck, klm!

L4H, look at those fuzzy little guys!!!

And Mama Robin has such pretty eggs!! Probably at least the last one will be a bit of a runt. If the parents can find lots of food, though, it'll still survive.

Congratulations L4H

Hazel did you manage to get anymore pics of the Indigo Bunting?

I still have no other takers on the remaining birdhouses, a House Wren was checking one of them out on saturday but no bites ....I guess I'm just going to console myself with the fact that the Tree Swallows are back.

Nope...indigo bunting is still playing really hard to get! I'd love to get some good shots of him, the catbird and a scarlet tanager...but I'm beginning to think this is one of those "not in my lifetime" propositions.

Oriole update

Here's my grape jelly set up! Name: cheer.gif
Views: 164
Size: 2.4 KB

Got my little plastic cup and started to drill a hole in the bottom to attach to the clothes post. DH asked me what I was doing and the next thing you know, he took the cup, tapped a nail into the bottom, took it outside and mounted it on the clothes line. I was ready to get out the step ladder and do it myself but DH is 6'5" so he didn't need a step ladder!

Ten minutes after mounting, the oriole came back to the hummingbird feeder and not the jelly!

Camera's ready and I'm bird watchin'!

LOL You'd figure the oriole would go to the nectar feeder since you were all staked out to take pics of the grape jelly, eh?

That was pretty nice of DH to help you out!

Good luck!!!

Reverse psychology eh?

Little buggers (two of them) came back just before the storm and got a last minute gobble on the nectar. Refreshed the nectar while making supper so everything is all fresh and camera is sitting on the windowsill! My mission is ...jelly!

I'm going to try jelly again tomorrow--we've had a string of rainy days, and mine melted. So I'll put out a fresh supply tomorrow!

Try putting out some oranges cut in half. I heard they love oranges.

Neat set up .
your hubby is like mine, I start doing a job and he thinks I can't do it so he does it for me

I wasted a few oranges before I finally came to the conclusion that they didn't want my oranges this year, either. I'm being shunned by my orioles and catbirds

It's kind of odd, though, cuz in previous years I'd had such good oriole luck with both orange halves and at the hummer feeders

Funny, I have had the same problem with the orioles this year too

American redstart--first spring male

This little American redstart was singing to beat the band, too. He looks like a female except that if you look closely you can see some black feathers here and there on his face and neck. By next spring, if he survives, he'll have a much more striking black-and-red pattern.

Talking I'm an auntie again

Robin eggs hatched sometime Thursday night, 13.5-14 days after being laid. I don't see the fourth egg that was laid some 3 days after the first three. I tried to count how many babies there were, but couldn't, then momma had a fit when I wouldn't leave the nest so I didn't look too long.
Name: Baby robins.jpg

The baby sparrows have almost doubled. Momma is busy feeding them so I can't get pics of them until she is gone for a while.

Hazel: not sure if you can ID the purple bird from this pic, I am thinking a purple finch??? The first one I have seen since I have moved in. Anyways, they were keeping Rose entertained

Fuzzy robin babies! Our bluebirds are still brooding the eggs--they should hatch sometime this week if I've counted right

The purple bird does look like a purple finch, though a closer pic would make ID more positive. The most common bird that might be mistaken for a purple finch would be a house finch, but the rosy coloration, lack of brown streaking on the flanks and the rosy nape all say 'purple finch' to hazel.

I don't have a good camera to get close ups and they fly away when I try to get close . It looked like a female version was on the feeder yesterday, much more brown.

The fem purple finches have a think bill and a wide white eye-brow stripe. The fem house finch look a lot different. If you're only getting female purple finches, that would also point to the male being a purple (as opposed to a house) finch.

Oh, they're growing so quickly, L4H! So sad when they leave the nest, but so nice to have more to come back next year!

I hope Jake heals up quickly!

A few more of the indigo bunting

A half-way decent side shot...

...a nice shot of the wing pattern...

...and then the sun came out and he began to glow!

He's got my number, though--I only got these shots because he didn't realize I was putting flowers in a planter behind the spruce where he couldn't see me! I snuck around the tree to get these shots, but he left the second he caught on.

So Hazel, I must ask...

Do you go outside, do a walkabout planting flowers and doing your own thing with a camera strapped around your neck?

I have my camera ready, sitting in my window but by the time I turn it on and focus, they fly away!

I've had a hummer come by now for the past 3 days and the orioles are licking up the jelly however; I get so excited watching them and by the time I turn on my camera to focus--their gone! Name: rant.gif

Guilty as charged...and on rainy days it's a real chore keeping the dang thing dry! But I got tired of missing all the good shots.

Occasionally I'll spot something out a window when I'm in the house...and invariably, the camera is in the next room... I miss those shots, too

Oh, oh, oh!! And I went over to check on the bluebirds this evening. I scratched on the box to let her know I was there, but no one came out. I heard a noise above me and there was Daddy bringing a juicy caterpillar home to Mom and the kids! So I'm thinking they've finally hatched, or are about to! I'll open the box and check in a few days!
