Which Flea Treatment is the safest?
I'm going to be ordering some flea treatment very shortly online, my vet closed down and I'm having issues getting another vet to prescribe it without charging me to see the cat (she was only at the vet less then 6 months ago).
Anyways alot of people I know use Advantage but I also read on here about frontline and revolution. I did use the Hartz one spot stuff a couple months ago and she did have a reaction and I'll never ever ever use it again. I know a reaction can happen with any product but I would just like to know what people have had the most success with. Problem I have is one cat is an indoor the other is an outdoor so he is bringing fleas into the house I will be putting him on a regular schedule from now on as fleas just make my skin crawl!! So ya experience, preference etc?!?! |

You can get Avantage multi. It is like revolution. Does the fleas, and other parastis, like worms, etc.

I use Advantage/Advantix for all my pets and it has been working great, also hasn't caused a reaction in any of them (I have 3 cats and 2 dogs). Any flea med can cause a reaction but I haven't heard of many problems with Advantage.
Frontline actually stopped working for me and just about everyone else I know and my pets ended up with a flea outbreak. Hartz is pretty ineffective flea treatment, so I wouldn't even bother with that even if it didn't cause a reaction. If you want to get rid of the fleas IMMEDIATELY (or as immediately as possible) you can give them Capstar, which will kill all/most of the adult fleas within 24 hrs and then treat with Advantage. That's how I took care of my flea outbreak and it worked good. |

Only use the ones from the vet, Advantage, Revolution (not sure about Frontline). Stay clear of any over the counter ones such as Hartz, there have been some very serious reations to them. I use Revolution and have been for years and have never had a problem with it.

I would agree with the posters so far that prescription medications are typically safer and more reliable. I do not usually recommend Hartz etc... As previously stated Frontline, Revolution and Advantage are all very good medications. There does seem to be some statements on Frontline being less effective on fleas than Revolution and Advantage. Frontline however is very good at ticks - which Revolution and Advantage does not get. Revolution also takes cares of mite infections and is a heartworm prevention. They are all slightly different.
Capstar is neat as it is oral and kills the fleas fast. Downside is that it is out of the system very quickly. There is a new medication called Comfortis (has yet to be released for cats). It comes from spinsad which was discovered in an abandoned Caribbean Rum distillery (which is a very nice tourist spot). It is made from a soil bacteria there. It is a once a month oral medication given to dogs. Lilly, who makes Comfortis, says that it has been shown to be safe in the off label use in cats and that they hope to release it in cats once they figure out the best way to make a "non-fail" cat chewable.... so maybe this will take a little longer than we think. Each medication is different and I usually talk to my clients on the pet's lifestyle, where they travel to, are their children around, etc... and help them choose the best one. There is no one answer for all.
